Yep I thought the same thing. I can't see many people spending that kind of money.

$120 ain't that bad for a year, considering an organised trail ride is normally $30-40 a go.
The diversity of riding in forestry areas to increase ones skill level is invaluable, most of it is stuff you just don't get on gravel roads or the like.
What will the penalties be like for getting nicked for not having a permit. Yes, we have been spoilt with free access for some time, but with OSH and liabilites etc, the forestry companies are prolly getting a bit more cautious about who exactly they let in and for what purpose "their" forests are being used. If it was my investment, I'd want to protect it too.
Sure there will be some who choose to not pay, but it's a bit like gambling, you never know when you number comes up and you get caught. Bit like regos really
Boaties have ramp fees, golfers have green fees, fisherman, hunters have annual licences, any form of racing has fees. It's a signof the times.
Me, I'll be happily paying this one.

If I could get permission to ride in Kaimanawa or Kaiangaroa Forest or the Mamakus, I would gladly pay $120 per year for access....To some degree we can already do this but not Kaiangaroa......Maybe on a Sunday...
I was told that getting caught in Kaiangaroa once is okay, the second time it is a 2 year tresspass notice and then confiscation etc....Ouch!

I think I'm with you on this Mr Frog, it's not a hell of a lot of coin........if you are riding regularly in the forest.
I won't be getting a permit though, because I only ride there a few times a year, if that.
Aaaand another thing..... we *cough* happily pay $15 each time to ride through Rainbow, I went through there 2 or 3 times last year, could've got a pass for the summer for that.

(i'm still not gettin 1 though)

$15 for the rainbow 3 times a year ain't $120. But thats not what worries me.........
Next $120 for the Manga then $120 for sharlands then etc. Seen this before in a land far away soon you will have little access, unless of course you comply otherwise the usual punitive measures will be taken etc, etc. This could just be the start.
    I can smell you....

The $120 is for Sharlands and Moutere blocks. And they are being nice in that you can get 3/6/9/12 months. Jatz you can pay $30 for 3 summer months, ride as often as you want.

This is not a new idea, it is done all 'round the country. Heck it's not even new for here, the permit scheme has been in limbo for 2-3 years; but it used to be $40-ish IIRC for an annual one, or only $5 if bought through NMCC.
    Cheers,
    Colin

$40 sounds good and fair to me $120 is starting to get pricey. But its probably the tip of the iceberg. These business practices start this way and escalate upwards. When you go from no profit to some it always looks good. This will be hard on some people.
Don't get me wrong, I feel good that they are been so nice to me. Can't wait for the govt to let me start charging going rates for my services ....ahhh user pays...repeat the mantra.

Slightly off topic, but I was just flicking through the real estate magazine thing and there was a house for sale on maungatapu road. Its on the pelorous road bit before the turn off to the Maungatap actual, where there are a few properties. Anyway the description stated that it could be a B&B, and that it was on the cycle trail.

Since when has the Maungatapu been part of the cycle trail? or have I missed something again. Or is there a conspiracy afloat here with the closure etc.?
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........
