    Gear oil for KDX200?

    sorry me again.

    kdx200

the manual states it needs 10w30 or 10w40 gear oil.
could not find any in repco today...... there is a lot of 10w40 engine oils......
no one from the staff could explain what is difference between gear and engine oil..

the question is ... can i use standard/ high performance/ synthetic engine 10w40 oil instead 10w40 gear oil?

if not , who sells them?

    thanx a lot

5 or 10W40 synthetic motorcycle (engine) oil from any bike shop and most servos.

Motorcycle oil has a different additive package....less friction modifiers than regular engine oil due to the need for consistant clutch friction.

They are recommending engine oil,not gear oil.10-30 is not a gear oil viscosity.Nearly all motorcycle manufacturers specify engine oil for gearboxes. If you are worried about friction modifiers and don't know how to recognise them, use a diesel engine oil, they don't have such things and have a better additive package. You can also use ATF or a 75-80 GL4 gear oil.

Do not use a GP diesel engine oil....It does contain friction modifiers, most mineral engine oils do to some degree. There are exceptions such as Mobil Delvac 5W40 because it is a full synthetic.

Use a Synthetic Motorcycle oil 5 or 10W40.

Synthetics are PAO (polyalphaolifins) with lower internanal traction and friction coefficients, they do not need the same degree of friction modifiers as mineral oils hence their preferred selection for MC wet clutches.

And your engine manufacturer may just know what he is talking about....

As my Dad would say, buying quality is like buying oats...if you want fresh new oats you gotta pay for it....but if you want oats that have been through the horse, well that comes a little cheaper....

For your gearbox walk in and ask for the cheapest 5 or 10w 40 synthetic they have..... If budget is what you want, a (15) or 10W40 mineral will suffice and if you find you have clutch slipping problems in the future, then consider a change to a more quality product.

Until you get it going (and judging by the description of the previous owners practices) I would not buy the best oil for it just now.
