Grease all the swingarm bearings, get a couple of spare rear wheel bearings, Grease steering head bearings, loctite subframe bolts ( all bolts actually) Get some safer footpegs if going anywhere with mud on, loctite footpeg bolts. Cut about 10-20mm off side stand if planning oncarrying luggage as it sits near vertical when loaded & very easy to tip over.
Be careful if going off road & having to do 3 point turns when getting used to riding it - they are extremely top heavy when full & if it gets 3 degrees off vertical it'll drop big time.
GO to klr650.net & checkout the 22cent mod. It involved lifting the needle by shimming it , drilling the slide 7/64ths & opening up the airbox - a must do as it transforms the motor. I put a R1 pipe on mine & sounds great & goes pretty well (Wooodmans older one goes faster tho)

Also - some '08s had electrical issues caused by the wiring loom chafing under the tank near the mounting for the radiator overlow tank. Should have been fixed on the later bikes but it's worth a look.
KLR650.net will be full of dire warnings about the doo (doohickey, aka balancer chain tensioner). While the pre '08s did have some breakages, the problem was more or less addressed in '08 and from there on should be ok.
Ventura do a headlight protector. I have heard replacement lights are in the region of $600. Faring plastics are expensive and there do not appear to be any aftermarket replacements.
If you know anyone who does fibreglass mouldings get patterns made from your plastics while they are still in good condition - you could corner the world market (and I'd buy your first set)
Off roadability is enhanced by going down 1 tooth on the front sprocket, but open road cruising suffers a bit. 4000 - 4500 rpm seems to be the engines sweet spot and with standard gearing this is around 110-120.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.

Bollocks, get of your arse and go get it
Cheers. as for the 22c mod, is that the same equivalent as doing a dynojet kit pretty much? I dont touch jetting myself so its easier to get the shop to just throw the kit in. Its got a gutted stock pipe on it already, but it sounds very average compared to my old motard.
I don't know what a dyno jet kit is but sounds pretty cool & hi techy. Look up klr50net & there are pretty good easy to follow pics. If I was to buy another one I'd def get rid of the stock pipe. They are really heavy & pretty restricted - even gutted ones. I'd get a 2nd hand sportbike stock pipe (heaps around, as they are always replaced with aftermarket pretty cheap compared to a new performance pipe) & get a exhaust shop to modify it to fit. The mods are very easy to do - takes bugger all time & really makes a difference.
I'd also really really recommend getting some crash bars if you're even remotely thinking about going slightly offroad - and you will want to cos as soon as you start going down gravel roads you' start wondering where all those tracks go toApparently the Givibars have a cross bar between the outside bars that stops them from bending in & hitting the fairings.
Did I mention loctite? Also the headlite cover is a very good call - I forgot to mention that as the replacements are in the $600-700s.
Don't be too disappointed with the performance compared to the motard - they'll go a lot more places
