@grasshoopperhus - sorry to hear your puddy tat ran. Thats sad. All our pets are special and loved, and when they go, its a huge loss
But here is Sam - the aged, but still gorgeous oriental siamese. 15 years old and still our princess

i really like cats but that urge needs to be resisted

cats are viscous killers and for the sake of our natives; we need to kill them all

if i was pretensident, i'd hand out free 22's to deal to them with

Lost Kaless (fixed) to moving him. He had moved well in the past, but at ten he was stuck in his ways. He didn't get on with the other cats in that house and went bush never to be seen again. Now I will have no pets until I can prove to myself that I can give them a stable home (still renting). I get annoyed with people that get kittens & pups but dump them when they get older I am strongly for fixing all dogs and cats that are not for breeding as I have seen too many unwanted pets. Also, as much as I like cats (many a wild kitten became my family's pet when I was a kid), wild cats are hell on native birds. Tom Cats are the worst, Lost Slyvester (fixed) to a wild Tom. So on the family farm unmarked Toms, unless know to be a Neighbour's pet. are assumed to be wild and are shot if they stick around hassling the fixed farm cats. It's a dirty job I hate doing, so please fix ya cats and look after them..

Neuter and release works to keep stray cat population stable.I have a trap, and get them neutered on various schemes.Don't release near native bush of course.Sparrows are expendable....so are mice and rats.

the only thing my cat has ever attacked is me (introduced pom), a few mice (introduced origin unclear) and a 30kg German Shorthaired Pointer (introduced German).

humans have wiped out the moa, practically the kiwi and god knows how many other species, only to have us try and solve the problem with 1080 and do more harm than good...

If you want to go after anything with a 22 there's a few politicians around doing a lot more harm than our wee mates

In our capitalist culture, I propose an economic solution: cat meat for export alongside fur and the same for stoats, weasels and dogs.

We are the farm of the world after all

I listened to a guy last year, on radio, who had done a study of cats and natives. He reckoned that cats stuck to rats and mice and that his local native bird population was better with cats than without. His thinking was that the rats (especially) and mice did more harm to native birds than the cats.

He was talking domestic cats - not feral cats BTW.

I lived next to native bush for years, and had a ginger cat who was a prolific hunter.Every morning the deck would be littered with rat parts.sometimes he came home with rabbits or ducklings....but never saw him with a native bird.

When I was a teen, "Inspector" was my "Gun Cat". She would come out Rabbit Hunting with me & pointed (yep like a hunting dog) the bunnies for me. She came back with a Fern Bird one day. A quite rear native bird, so I know pet cats do hunt native birds. Most of the cats I have had, have waited under the Japanese Cherry Tree hoping a drunk Tui will drop down & have tried to catch Fantails (they tended too be good a flyers for most pet cats). Don't be fool by ya Moggy, they can hunt well. Ya dogs aren't so innerscent ether. Don't let them wander unsupervised near farms or bush, especially at night. Dogs can find Kiwi very tasty & Farmers can shot dogs wandering on their Farms if they expect the dog has been worrying stock.

    Our two Burmese.

Loads of character. These two aren;t really the best of mates, but they tolerate each other. Just lately one of them has started bringing rats into the house and eating, or leaving them part eaten in one particular spot in the spare upstairs bedroom. last saturday brought in a live one and left me to catch the bloody thingClick image for larger version.
