AMI insurance and rider training courses

I'm currently insured through AMI and have booked a pro-rider course at Manfield in May. The guy behind the counter at AMI told me there was no policy applying to bikes and tracks days only cars so he used that and according to him "he couldn't see a problem with it" as long as I wasn't racing etc

Hasn't anyone had a more official response from AMI or had any issues with them in regards to riding on a track?

Read your policy, and if in doubt - get it in writing.

As I said there wasn't a policy applying to bikes and having 'should be sweet' in writing wont do much if I need to claim on it

I've sent them a email so I can get a more formal response but thought I would try here in the mean time as I doubt I'm the only one insured through AMI

If you have insured your motorbike, then there will be a motorbike insurance policy. There has to be. And that policy will list and requirements or exclusions.

Ask for a letter saying that you are covered for the day.

I thought Mainfeild was classed as a private road so you were covered with insurance for track training but not for racing

I'm with AMI and I have assumed my bike isn't covered for track days - they don't seem to be interested in bike cover so I just took it as bare bones.

Might be worth me checking - get to go a bit harder, and run my tires even more shagged than I do now ....

I asked AMI about track days before I got bike insurance and they quite explicitly told me over the phone that I would not be covered. Although it did take them a while to figure out what a 'track day' was, she had to go ask her supervisor lol.

In the end I went with NAC who know heaps more about bikes, straight away said sure no problem.

Excess is higher though.

I enquired before the first time I took my bike on to the track and got the answer from the branch manager (Tauranga), that as long as the purpose is rider development - not racing, and it is not being timed, then it is in both our best interests that I attend. Coverage under these circumstances was no problem.
I have made a point of ringing and advising them before each track day (three that I have done)

My wife and I used to be insured with AMI.These days it's Swann Insurance.Unlike AMI they will and do cover our bikes on track days.Again there can be no timing of laps or actual racing, it must be for rider training and they also encourage it.Only thing we have to do is notify them if we are going to attend a track day.
Surprised to hear that the Tauranga branch Manager said that, but if he's willing to stand by it then who am I to poo poo his parade.
In writing is the nonky answer for this one, if they say yes, and you crash, then they can say whatever, screwed then.

I finally got a written reply from the manager of the Gore branch and he said the same thing.

The Pro Rider days are not classed as a track day, but a training day.
Print out the info they emailed you that states that it is NOT a track day...like there are no timed laps, and show it to them.
I`m with AA and had no problems.
Get a signed agreement that you are covered.
The Pro Rider days are great...I may just do the May Manfield day also.

State covered my ProRider day on the basis was a training day.
