I've been offered $1000 for my 1986 CBX550F2 as a trade in. It has just over 80,000km on the clock, a poked starter motor and a blown fork seal. Does this sound like a good deal or could I get more if I sold privately?

Ask yourself a couple of questions
How much do you want your new bike?
How much will it cost you too repair your bike?
would you pay more than $1000 for your bike as is?
The dealer will be considering how much its going too cost to get the bike ready for sale, add their mark-up and hope its sold quickly.....
I was offered $2500 for my 86 750 bold'or as a trade but ending it selling it privately for $3000 a week later which I knew it was worth that and that the shop had said they would have it on the floor at $4500
So I would Take the $1000 and tell them you want 6 mths rego and a full tank of gas with your new bike
Trademe is littered with bikes that are not selling.
If you want the new one do the deal and ride away - you'll be smiling the next day on your new ride.![]()
I'll give you $500 for it.
I'm not trying to insult you here...but are you fucking kidding me? You've got a 24 year old 550, with huge km's on it. They were never popular, and not as good as offerings from the other brands at the time. It needs money spent on it...and you're asking if the trade price is fair? Shit mate...I'll sell you a 1987 FZR1000 with reg, a new wof, and a full warranty for $2500.00.

Well I paid $2000 for my CBX550 in good condition with 24 kilo klicks back in erm, well about 1990,
hold on it was before that.
Think I got less than a k when I sold it with about 90k on it a few years later.
All that said, if you keep it for another 15 yrs some sad old version of Trashy will get a boner for it & start a bidding war on Tardme that will have the rest of us rubbing our Temples.
Or laughing at me doing the same if a clean F2 YPVS comes up (15 years will be long enough for alcohol fermentation to stir the nostalgia valve enough).
Don't you look at my accountant.
He's the only one I've got.
You will get more for the bike if you sell it privately. Think about it - the shop is offering $1,000. They will sell it at a profit so they expect to put it on their shop floor for more than $1,000. What they price it at will depend on how much they are making selling you the new bike.
At $1,000 tradein they are offering you a token gesture to make the sale. So they will make money on selling to you and anything better than break even on the 550 is a bonus - so they are not going to sell it for much more - especially as they'll have to spend money on it to sell it.
OK - BUT as has been pointed out - there's heaps of bikes on trademe that are not selling.
So, you will get more for it - but when is the big question.
I'd take the tradein deal - relieves you of the pressure of selling, of possibly spending money on the 550 before selling .. and it's not going to be much more that you get for it ... not enough to make it worthwhile trying to sell privately.
Take the deal ...
"So if you meet me, have some sympathy, have some courtesy, have some taste ..."
How many shops would actually trade a bike from the 90s, let alone the 80s? Must be desparate for the sale & hope they can move it along on Tardme out the back door.

It's not what you pay for the new bike, and it's not what you get for your trade-in. The only bit that matters is the bit in the middle, the bit you have to pay.
If someone is offering to take a broken CBX550 off your hands and give you something for it, and the price for the new bike is on par with others for sale, take the deal and ride away laughing.
Riding cheap crappy old bikes badly since 1987
