    Stereo advice wanted

I'm looking at spending around $400-$500 on a sound system to hook up to my computer. I don't really care about surround sound or excellent sound quality, I just want the most amount of power possible so I was thinking of getting a 15" car sub or 2 12s and hooking them up to a home theatre or house stereo amp. I'm looking at running 2 speakers + the sub(s).

I'll be buying all the gear second hand.

For years I have run my puters thru a Yamaha RX-450 amp and some Wharfedale bookshelf speakers.

My pick from whats on trade me at the moment.

With that set up you could add another power amp to drive a sub if you want.. But I don't think you'll need one

    LMFAO.

I want to smash your set up already.

Is that a piss take?, You want some shitty car speakers and a sub? Fuckin hilarious.

Even a semi-respectable set of speakers would kill that, A sub on a music system is like tassels on a Harley rider, Tossers buy em thinking its the real deal but they are good for fuck all but being gay.

I've just got an old yamaha a400 amp, and some 100w 100db denon speakers. Plenty loud enough, total cost $145 off trademe, amp even came with a free tape deck.

Power at the expense of sounds quality is like buying a bike without handlebars.

I think the Logitech systems are the best value for money for what you want.

Obviously you have no idea what you're talking about. I've seen several sound systems in houses that use a car sub, some even with a car amp and they sound pretty damn good. It's all about bang for buck - you can buy a fancy home stereo, but it's very expensive in comparison to car audio to get the same amount of power.

Are you offering to pay for a stereo, or are you just talking shit?

I got "only" a 220W Panasonic system (bought 6-7 years ago) something like this
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics...-366679493.htm (This one is nearly 3 times more powerful than mine)

I hooked it upto my laptop via AUX and it has enough power to blow my room 5 times over. Oh and yes, it's "only" 220W.

Just how much power do you actually need???

If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.

    +1 for that.
Logitech Z-5500 would be my pick or the replacement Z906. These are 5.1 if you want 2.1 Logitech also do those but if this is for games they are MUCH more immersive with 5.1 and you can find these round brand new in the 300-400$ range

I'd like a decent turntable to FLAC my LP collection... I've access to a nice Yamaha one with a decent head, but there's no way to do it quickly :-/

I've a Z680 set that died in the earthquake man, probably just what you want if you can find one. Bass over powers everything quite heavily (10" sub IIRC"), so sucks for musics, but epic for games with guns or engines.

    Here's one: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Computers/P...-366837733.htm

They were about $330 NEW IIRC. Optical in from your PS2/PS3, and 3x 3.5mm jacks for full 5.1 from an analogue device like a PC.

    Hmmm...

Interesting comments on this thread, I have been meaning to get some decent speakers for my laptop but I have other ideas now. I upgraded a nice little Plinius integrated amp a couple of years ago and it has been sitting in the cupboard because I couldn't be arsed selling it, and i just noticed a pair of nice little Tannoys on Tardme. It will cost me about the same as a plastic chinese sound system to get real audio for my lappy.
Don't blame me, I voted Green.
