    Rimutakas in the winter?

    Hey everyone.

Do the rimutaka's stay fairly passible for bikes through the winter? Can you expect frosty/icey roads at times? Also, do the they only close the road when there is a major accident, or can weather conditions close it as well?

Hi. You can ride the hill all year round. Yes some ice in winter and sometimes closed due to snow.
Ride it until the wheels fall off...

+1 but occasionally closed for wind or at least police warning bikes and caravans to take care due to wind but that's more a spring or autumn problem.

In strong winds try and keep your speed UP. Works for me. You seem to cut through the side gusts better with a bit of speed. Too slow and the gusts can really lift you and the bike across the road. Also, keep your upper body low to mimimise how much wind hits you.

Rain, snow? What, here in Wellington..never.

    Yes.

Definitely. There are plenty of corners that get no direct sunlight in winter.

They close it for both. It's been closed (briefly) by snow for the last 3 years at least.

Don't rely on it. If there's been a warning issued and you don't need to be up there then don't be. Ice is fucking slippery.

Enough of the humour. The Rimutakas are snowed under for at least three months through the middle of winter. Take it easy and carefully follow the track marks from the snowploughs and you should be OK. If you see Yeti footmarks, that's a good sign that the avalanche risk that day will be low. Some of the chain hire places are a bit dodgy, particularly those that are subsidiaries of Pakistani suspension component manufacturers.

Other than the subsidiaries of Pakistani suspension component manufacturers? Retailers of bikes with single-sided swing arms have a major advantage.
