Durability. Comfortable enough on the seal, handles the abuse it's going to get off road, Doesn't cost a fortune in broken plastic when it falls over, and easy/cheap to repair/maintain.

I have had many adventures on bikes that have "some" off road capability ...

Lower seating height so I can stand on uneven ground without having an impromptu closer look at the ground.

Of all the replies this is the one that I like the most. It doesn't matter if your bike has a 21 inch front wheel, good ground clearance, lightness, lowness etc etc, if your bike doesn't put a smile on your dial - well it is just the wrong bike for you!!

    A close second is:

The ability to give and take a lot of shit.

Monstaman put my number 1 in being seat height because I'm a short arse, second would be weight. I don't like heavy bikes in the dirt coz every now and then you've got to pick it up when no one else is in sight.
    Cheers

    Another vote for lightweight

If you know you can pick it up, you have a hell of a lot more ambition and confidence to have a nudge at something that looks a little sketchy
