Customs don't want to know about it unless its more than $400nz with includes shiping prise..

I believe that you can ask who ever you are buying the goods from to write a lesser amount on the invoice in case Custome etc take an interest.
Don't ask how I know.....
Funny you say that cos I enquired about a price, sales tax & shipping from oncycles in the US for something & in the reply they stated really clearly that they do NOT write gift or change amounts or intentionaly try to mislead customs etc. I hadn't asked them about it - they must get quite a few people wanting to try it on.

Yes I have. I was recommended them by a friend you used them on a fairly regular basis with small items.
I've had a couple of items sent on to me from them. A helmet was the largest.
Basically they set you up a USA address - many USA stores don't ship international so you have them ship to your USA Shipitto address and they ship on to you. They get a set charge for the handling (US$8.50 I think in my cases) and you get to choose what shipping option you desire to send to NZ.
My experience has been that it has been quick and easy.
Yes you need to fill out a customs declaration prior to them sending the package - this removes the responsibility from them and you are the one responsible for the customs declaration. No big deal - just declare what it is and the price you paid.
You'll only have a issue if you bullshit the price and get caught. Items under NZ$400 (including shipping I think) are of little interest to customs and I've never been charged a customs fee or GST on many sub $400 packages.
The exchange rate is more important than tax payable ... keep a watch on that ...
