Bomb range ride today 6.08.11

Pretty fucking unscruplious to ride in an area that is well known to be illegal, is closely monitored by the cops and which is giving dirt bikers a bad name by people riding there with a big 'fuck you' attitude.

But yeah life is too short to care about the rest of the dirt biking community that might have some interest in keeping a good positive public image of the off-road riding scene in NZ. I'ts not like anyone would want to develop the industry or anything, it's far more fun to have to fight to keep what we have, against councils and members of the public who just think we're a bunch of reckless wank stains that ride where ever the hell we want and fuck anyone who disagrees.

That's why I ride there with a wof and reg. If other people want to risk the fines then that's their decision to make. If anything it's a decent source of revenue for the popo?

Its still illegal to ride there with a wof and reg.

It just like when we are on the hunting blocks and some fuckhead rides though the middle of them. Fuck i wish we could use them as target practice.

Gee let me think.........

Since it is not public land, so like any private land you need permission to be there.

The whole of woodhill forest is private land and the land owners let the public cross it so to access the beach or at times let others hire it out for recreational activities.

- if you stop to read the sign anyone from the NZDF can stop and ask you for ID and reason for being there. If you have no permission you can be arrested and fined ....heavily.

If someone is in there and they hit one of those things what do you think the PC brigade will do then????

My dad was in the air force and was regularly there blowing stuff up. He says they used to tell people there was unexploded ordinance lying around, but that was seldom the case. If they were expecting something to go bang and it didn't, they dug it up again and made it go bang. He has a photo of guys standing in/around a 30ft crater dug to get an unexploded bomb back. Had it had gone off then, the funnel shape of the ground would have wiped them all out.

It does seem uncharacteristically irresponsible for the military to leave live ordinance lying around.

There is a sky hawke bomb that got dropped in the 70's that is missing. They never recovered. Most things now are found and then blown up.
However the Americans stored old stuff up there and just covered it up with sand....not sure I really like that sort of roulette

But agree with the Stay Away part

That would be a military that has members who drive tanks into officers mess's & other assorted chaotic things

, whilst I actually agree they are responsible nowadays, 30+ years ago I'm be alot less convinced.

It just seems to me riding somewhere that bombs have been dropped for a very long time is one day not going to work out well for somebody.

Alot of the people who ride there are military. If the DF want to crack down on it then perhaps they should look a little closer to home

One of the Key Issues identified by RDC and it's recommendation: To address a code of behaviour to individuals who use the resources.

If you care to read the attached document it talks about the bomb range, off-road recreational vehicles, bomb-range activity notification, who has management rights on what part of crown land, public access rights on which roads and more.

Key Issues/Opportunity
Access through forest is often closed due to forestry operations need
for formal agreement in place between Rodney District and CHH which
guides management of public access in line with the easement.

Ecological values and conflicts
Papakanui Spit and in the bombing range area where 4WD access is
impacting on native birdlife including threatened species.

Poor signage/ interpretation, lack of clear direction for users

High community priority for better public access

Bombing range use likely to continue

Toilets recently removed due to vandalism but need for facilities due
to high usage

Increasing motorised recreation use need for formal agreements
code of behaviour to be developed with clubs includes fishing clubs South Head Forest.
