    Harpers Pass

I had the same theory, a few years ago, that Harpers would be the way to go, and having ridden up the true left bank of the Hurunui on a trail bike (OK then, an XR185) as far as possible, it seemed a trials bike would be the way to go to cross over.

A couple of years ago I tramped up the Taramakau to Harpers Pass, with a view to riding after scouting the route on foot, and although at low tide (not today!) you could probably get up the river as far as Locke Stream Hut without too much difficulty, (indeed, in places the old coach road is still intact) there's no way that you'd get to (or from) the Pass from there.

However, there is another pass that might be possible, with a small team, and without giving away too many secrets I have a 3 x trials bike plan underway for early autumn 2011. All to be revealed after blazing success, or indeed dismal failure.

I know a guy from the coast years ago who was coming back from an enduro in canterbury and Arthurs pass was blocked. He really needed to get home so rode his bike (xr from memory) through the Otira tunnel and home to Greymouth.
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........

One year the Nelson Motorbike Club advertised a Heaphy Track ride. "Must use trials tyres".
There were sooooo many enquiries for entry forms it wasn't funny.

There were also some very nasty phone calls that almost needed referring to the popo...

But it was soooo funny as it was to be run on 1st April and no-one got it

Have you scouted the Boyle river to Waikiti downs. There is a track still thereas far as I know.
It was origionally a cattle track.it was called the Amuri pass No idea why.the road at Waikiti downs is staill called Amuri road.
This was the easiest candiate for the road route to chch from the West Coast but it never happened as the area north of the Grey river was the Nelson district.
The area south was Canterbury district and all the revinue from the gold rush times was going by Boat to Aussie,so the prefered option was to go ahead with the Arthurs Pass route thereby the gold revinue stayed in the Canterbury region.
There is also the snowy river to Blue Grey palmers bend If you were keen enough it is possible on a horse.
