Personally I would look for a set that work off a 12 volt battery and have a foot operated switch, that way you're not reliant on a source of 240v power or someone to help you

I got a 24v mitsubishi starter motor off trademe for $75, picked up some conveyor rollers and side plates, a few sprockets, some chain etc and got it pretty much sorted in a couple of days for under $500.
The 24V is a bit of over kill, but it'll start anything, and isn't too heavy for one person.

I've added a cover over the chains / starter motor, some non slip rubber on the rollers (would knurl them if I did it again) and a coat of black paint since the photo.
Where did you get the gear from to match the starter motor? the car ones I have looked at in the past seem to use some orphan gear.

240v is necessary for the tyre warmers (it's an F3 bike running slicks). Only time the warmers aren't used is when it's wet and then I'm in a pit shed. All 3 of the North Island tracks have sheds with power. Only time I might have a problem is at Paeroa or Wanganui, where I'd have to use a generator for the warmers anyway.

I reckon using a Grinder is much simpler.

I looked at doing a similar style of 240v rollers - price up the same size buffer vs a grinder - there were some bargains around. Drive via a quill shaft through one roller to absorb shock loads.

BTW for those interested - Ross Ennis - Rosco - is OK, house is in 3 pieces though...

I took the starter motor down to Gear Cutting Services in Ellerslie and had one made to suit - about $120 and one week.

If you put a decent grinder on it it'll start anything.

Will do if you buy a grunty one. Check out the specs in the pics on my post #9. 2200w will cold start a high comp twin or 4cyl postie in it's sleep. You have to be quick with the clutch when they catch though. I watched some clown at the Island nearly Phuck his mates starter by reving the engine in gear after it lit. Grinders like to give, not receive, if you know what I mean? Bit like me really.

you could make one easily if you look on trademe for a petrol weedeater with a fucked shaft. chop shaft, little fab work, and boom, light, portable starter!!
