    Repacking my exhaust

I took the end off the DRZ exhaust & his is what I found. I'm not sure what it's supposed to look like.

Is there any way of repacking this? i've not repacked an exhaust before.

Most modern 4T OEM exhausts are solid, that is, they don't have packing but solid metal baffles.

2T and some straight-through race 4T pipes have it.

That bit there is the outlet - in will fit inside a core or chamber. Chances are the chamber has perforated holes in it and packing. Nothing to pack on the piece in the picture. If you want it louder drill out the rivets holding the bent over piece on the inlet end and remove that piece of metal.

Whats left inside the pipe Padders? Just a big whole of nothing or some pipework coming out of another chamber and stuff, got a pic?

That's the spark arrestor. If it's a straight through system it will have packing,if it has baffles then no packing....then again maybe as some baffled systems still use a packed chamber.

why would you want to repack a muffler on a 4 stroke?

it took 20000km on the klr for the packing to disintegrate and give a fine mellow bark - kind of like ageing a fine wine

And having it turn into vinegar...

Really sharp, bitey vinegar that makes you screw your face up.

Then someone will come along and go "I quite like that..."

I'll try to take a pic up my back passage. It's pretty dark up there. When I looked all I could see was some fish scaled like covering around the outside of the can. I don't think there was another skin if you know what I mean.

I want to quieten it down so thought maybe wrapping packing around that insert may work.

I will prob rejet back to stock as my mech warned I may be gettting major bore wash i'm using so much fuel for so little mileage.

Getting an idea of whether there's just a big full length empty hole right down to the far end of the pipe vrs the pipe being chambered and having smaller pipes coming through from the previous chamber should give an idea about whether that section was supposed to be packed or not.

I'm gona keep the standard pipe for adv duty (can't stand loud pipes for more than a few hours), but padmei your welcome to try my standard end cap to confirm that the rest of yours is ok while i'm over at safari, the only real (practical) difference to your butcher'd one is it has a 20-25mm cap in the end of it. would be easy enough to make a restrictor to bolt into your pipe to do the same job.

I also have a few main jet's that should get you in the ballpark, i've currently got a 155 in with the std pipe and will run a 160 0r 162 with the open carbon one, i've also just done the "eddie mod" and set it up propperly if you want a hand. It seems to work really well but am waiting on a new float bowl gasket before giving it a propper test run.

    Cheers
