If you payed for a set of new tyres, would you expect to get two new tyres?
As for people who point out that replacement is only $18 or so...

The price of a P.P. has nothing to do with the cost of manufacture (other than needing to be more than the cost, obviously).

They know plates are a personal choice thing, so quite deliberately the cost is set high and the money used for, well, making profit. A big chunk goes to Government mandated things; like the ACC - and has done since plates were first available (and cheaper than now). It was part of the "deal" for making them purchasable.

What I don't get is why this surprises people.

You think plates should be an "at cost" thing made simply as a favour to citizens?

Yes, you could have a vehicle with 1 or 6 number plates for that matter and I'm sure the cost would remain the same, as you are not paying for the plates you're paying for the privilege of having something different.

That said I think they are getting a tad pricey now for a 'normal' personalised plate, didn't seem that long ago that they were only about $300 odd.

You forget though, pzkpfw that there are some in NZ and for some strange reason particularly in motorcycling who see any person or company who makes a profit out of them as ripping them off!

Maybe John Key was right when he said all Kiwi's have a socialist streak, some just obviously have more than others......

I have no issue with the price of personalised plates. No one is making you buy one.

It's not a tax you have to pay.

(Not saying plates are art of course (except mine), just that concepts of "value" go beyond simple material content.)

Or that we even have one.

Not many countries have that system iirc.

    Would that be considered offensive?

hahahahhahaha ^^^ How many jews live in nz? but I would seriously love to see that on a bike.. Some plates make me laugh I like those ones.. I'v seen some gay ones tho, I remember one bleach haired boy with wraparound sunnies driving his BMW with the plate BMABOI. surely he could think of something better.

I have a plate on my blade, but I had to get it for other reasons, its Q H8R, as in hate traffic queues, I'v had the odd laugh from car drivers when I do the lane split to the front of the line at lights. and I don't think its the worst plate around most ppl don't notice its a p/plate I think there are good and bad plates around. BLADE looked good on the fireblade it was on etc. ISELWD (I sell weed) or something like that, I think he might have had a message plate with some of it written at the top was on a shitty old hatchback, was one I laughed at, couldn't believe they would print that off..
