in that range there isnt going to be much, and its probably not worth asking your preferences, because youll need to take whats available . .

You might pick up an older honda 400 or a savage or the like.
Have you thought about holding off till you have a tad more? Have a look int he $3750-$5000 range and theres a fair bit more.

smaller number of people in the country = less new bikes being bought = older bikes hold their value more. you might be able to pick up a cbr400 for that price, definately a gb400 (though probably not powerful enough) up here in auckland there is a yami xjr400 for 1300 http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=410575527 ...just gotta keep looking! as we go into summer more bikes will come up...

There's a guy cashing up his stock in Hokitika for around your budget 2.5-3g
Gsx600f, TDM850, XJ750 all good reliable models just choose 1.
As you're in the Sth Island would Nth Island bikes be out of the picture due to costs to get to you?
You can even get a trail bike eg DRz400, XL600 for 3g to explore the areas around Queenstown, wud be my choice.

    Nought wrong with that.

I'd be surprised if he didn't drop a couple hundred from the price aswell. Start him at $2200 and you can meet in the middle at $2500, which is probably what he wants for it anyway.
