Treatment of (f**cking) large hematoma from race accident - Help please!

I smashed my tailbone after crashing into a lip of a ripple strip while bucket racing, so not very huge speeeds but fast enough..... I broke my tailbone (which is healing/ed nicely) except I have a large hematoma from the right of my coccyx and into my butt cheek. It's 10 cm's long and at least that wide at the top of it and gets smaller toward the end.

I have had ongoing issues with the hematoma including an infection (treated) and the pain was almost gone. 3 months on and I still have the hematoma and it's still the same size. Over the past two day's it's felt much more irritated. I can't massage arnica into it anymore and its REALLY itchy, I am not as mobile as it hurts to move and I have pain down my leg at times. So as I gave up on my GP after the last visit and being told to "take your pain killers and rest" and I went and saw a physio - she has never seen one as big as this and is going to consult some of her colleagues but holds out little hope.... Both have suggested surgery after at least a year.....

Anyway - am wondering if anyone on here has had a similar issue/ accident and if so, what treatment helped? I am open to anything including acupuncture and some other alternative treatments......

Make another apointment with your doctor, stress to him that you're finding it difficult to live with the problem and it's not improving. If you're not then confident he has a workable treatment plan ask to be refered to a specialist.

If that doesn't happen and you're still in pain or worried go to the ED, at least there you'll get a fresh diagnosis. Be prepared to wait.

    Luck, H.

Oh dear... sorry to hear that, from what I have heard, hemo's just need draining. Had one on my brain some time in Dec 1983 at Gracefeild and they just waited til it went away. Think it's gone now...

OUCH!!! - of course I like to things 'properly' mine is a solid ball. Doc has tried putting needle into it a few times - no success.

It's been ultrasounded (SIC!) and x-rayed. Specialist won't see me until its been there a year.....

Warning - not a pretty sight!

Sorry to hear this - you poor wee thing . I had a similar (but not so bad) injury - landing on the dangerous concrete ripple strip at Mt. Wellington (a rider clipped my wide bars trying a risky overtaking manoeuvre in practice ). It was my lower spine that took the brunt of it. My coccyx was fortunately intact. The physio lady also said it was the biggest bruise she had worked on. The Hematoma was large and the physio worked it painfully hard on each visit. It eventually dispersed over many months. I don't really like to show this photo but you will see it was also quite nasty. I appreciate that your injury is much worse.

SNAP! My whole right butt cheek and lower back was that colour for weeks. Went ot a lovely black then purple then blue, green yellow.... I almost had to buy new pants as my arse cheek was so swollen I couldn't get most of my pants on!!

Sucks, eh! The physio has said that it is a bit too late and in the wrong place (glute) to just be able to work it out now. If I'd have know I would've gone to see a physio earlier. Thought it would slowly start to get better, I am not a patient person so this is really testing me. M just had shoulder reconstruction surgery too so maybe I have just been doing too much??

    Nothing

22 months later it is still slightly swollen and tender

Ultrasound some 7-8 months after the accident went along the lines of
    Person 1
"Oh I haven't seen anything like that before I will get someone else to have a look"
    Person two
"That's quite interesting We'll just get the head of the department"
Head of department after 5-10 minutes
Very interesting injury, haven't seen anything like it, it will take ages to heal and there's really nothing that can be done

Mine was front in front of the hip to the other side of my spine and from just above the waist about 150mm down, Thanks for running into me Harvey you bastard

I guess I must have stated my first post wrong. I know it's going to take some time but I need some way of lessening the side effects. I would do anything to make the itchiness dissapear, it's driving me mental cause now I can't even touch it. Yet up to three days ago I was able to massage it everyday and it was helping....just not sure why it gets better then flairs up again.....

Stick some Marigold flowers on it. If it doesn't help at least your arse will smell lovely

Maybe I just got lucky as I had none of that, it's not a particular type of clothing rubbing and causing irritation?
