    Big bad brad

    Ok, so I'm a road rider at heart and always will be but I have myself this pretty wee '79 CR250 for vmx

    I haven't had much dirt experience but can't wait to race. Given that vmx tracks are more like a road track on dirt rather than the big boys ones with big fuck off jumps, vmx will suit me fine

    I still need all the dam help I can get

    Yeah Rach I have both those books, they were my training guides back in the day. Some very good information and pictures in these books, don't think I've seen any better although there are a few newer techniques available for advanced riding, but these books will still provide more information than you will know what to do with. The Championship Training manual also has many good tips that cross over into other sports and gave me a good grounding in my teen years that that has paid of in not only MX, but MTB, road cycling, martial arts, boxing, kayak and ski racing. Once you get a good base and grounding and build from there, the typical pyramid as found in the book applies to many sports.
    Other book which has helped over many sports is Greg Lemonds Complete Book of Bicycling, again its not just the sport it aims to help you with, its the way its presented that holds your interest and the principals cross over into so many other sports.

    Bad Brad is THE man.

    I had that book as a kid, but foolishly lent it to a mate and never saw it again. Only now have I replaced it, and fuck it's great. Yes there are new techniques now etc, but the book also serves as a fantastic look at the history of Moto-x in the boom years...it's worth it for that alone I reckon.

    The problem today is for many riders it costs a lot of time and money to go ride and practice. Back in the day you could jump on your bike and ride down the road to some open land, yet developed subdivision or motorway, even empty land between factorys that had jumps etc that everyone used to ride and no one cared about, it was so easy to ride every day and hone the skills. We used to head out after work and just ride until dark, only cost us our fuel, everywhere was free to ride.

    Damn straight. I used to ride my RM400 to college, then fuck off up the firebreaks right after school. Did a couple of practice starts on the cricket pitch after school once, as I hated the captain of the 1st 11. That showed him.

    I learned to ride off road in the local shingle pit. Doing exactly what you're talking about, quite illegal, but no one seemed to care, least of all the local cop: presumably because he knew where we were and if we were doing that we werent out getting into other trouble. Aye, them were t'days

    A warning first. About looping out. It isnt much fun. On the body abuse scale it rates about a three, just behind botulism and swimming the English channel
