Seat surgery?

I'm thinking about having the seat lowered a tad F800gs. Maccas place at Tauranga seems to be the go in this part of the world but before I commit I would like to hear (or better still see) from anyone who has had their 800 seat doctored.

How much is tha bmw low seat option?

Low seat not cheap but more comfortable than the standard.

I understand the low option purchased new is $500. I spoke with Maccas today and to cut and recover my existing seat would be $400 so my choice is clear - two seats for little more than the price of one chopped one.

My 800 had a Macca's seat on it when I got it. It was very comfortable.

Why? A seat is a personal fit kind of thing. What somebody else has had done may work for them but be uncomfortable has hell for you. Go to Mac and get him to customise your seat for you. He knows what he's doing and his workmanship first class.

Hmmm, since you've asked I'll tell you. From a purely personal perspective I'd like to hear of others personal experiences with cutting up a stock F800gs seat. Was your experience with an F800gs seat? or something different which could be another story altogether. His skill and workmanship is not being questioned by me, however unless I hear of some really good results I will buy a BMW item for little more than having the original cut up.

Even that may not fit you as well as having a full custom job done. It's only a BMW 800's seat, nothing too exotic. I am sure that the process Mac will use will be the same that he uses for any motorcycle seat.

Perhaps I've not been clear. I'm not looking for a "made to measure" seat specifically made for my bum. "Fit" is not the issue and I'm happy enough with the stock seat except that I would like to get my feet a little more firmly on the ground particularly on unsealed surfaces so lowering seems to me to be my easy option. This of course will thin out an already thin seat but in my experience bulk does not always equal comfort. Hope this clarifies things for you, thanks for your input.

You're right. Suzukis have bulky foam seats that cut people in half in no time at all. The V-Strom stock seat is the best/worst example of this.

There are a range of foams that can be fitted to motorcycle seats. Mac did a great lowering job on my wife's bike, removing all of the standard foam and replacing it with another sort less than half the thickness but still comfortable and easy on the arse for a woman who does serious saddle time. Thank you for your input too.

Have a look at these guys, I have one on my TE630 and it is so much better than a stock seat.

Price is not to bad either, I got mine delivered in 3 days to aussi and it cost me $30 to have installed.

They are narrow t the front so they don't gt in the way when you are standing, then widen out where you sit to support your whole butt.

Just to update those that helped with advice/comment. I eventually found a brand new standard seat for a good price on TM; Found some posts on Adv Rider re cutting up these seats; Followed the instructions carefully and I now have a seat that is somewhat lower and more comfortable. Only help I needed was to get an upholsterer to staple the cover back on as you need three hands to do it yourself and I couldn't wait for my wife to get home (anyway she'd have killed me if I stapled her digits to the seat). So one happy F owner. Thanks again guys.
