How many Kiwi world champions are/were there?

I read recently that Aussie has turned out 28 world champion motorcyclists (all categories) and figured that NZ has probably had at least half that many.

Has anyone published (or have access to that sort of info)?

Only 28? I reckon we could almost match that.

I'll kick you off with Ivan Mauger with 9 world championships, and Katherine Prumm with 2. Hugh Anderson had 4.

I think Ben Townley and Shayne King have 1 apiece?

That makes 15.......... If IOM TT's and land speed records are counted???? I seem to recall that the IOM TT's were considered to be a stand alone World championship untill the 80's?? or am I just dreaming?

Better count Shaun then if you are including IOM wins.

Not the GP, but I believe that he did win two 500cc F1 world championships (as well as two or three British nationals)

Sounds fair but to be honest I don't think the aussie count of 28 included IOM TT's or land speed records (though not sure as the book I read didn't list them all... knowing the way they operate it's likely some are kiws anyway). Am keen to hear what others opinions are on that side of things.

Larry Ross won a world teams championship, Croz won 2 TTF1 championships onlyrun over 3 rounds from memory with the TT being one rnd, the bike were 1000cc 4 stroke.

Great effort that Anstey has had at the TT his titles there can't really be compared to Anderson which were won back in the day when it was a kosher world championship round against the best riders in the world.

9 riders winning 35 World Championships, according to Rhys Jones, Legends on 2 Wheels, 2009.

I did a search on Larry ross and couldn't find any record of world championship wins. Do you have the info on his wins and are they recorded anywhere?

Yes Anstley is amazing but I'm starting to think that IOM wins shouldn't count as world championship wins.. Though if someone knows a bit about the IOM history in international standings (as a standalone world championship), I would be pleased to hear about it.

Other great riders who really should have/deserved to win a world championship.
    Keith Tucker,
    Ginger Malloy,
    Kim Newcomb,
    Aron slight,

I started with that but he has missed some who have definitely won world championships. Katherine Prumm, Stefan Merriman and Tony Cooksley (equal to 33% of the number he acknowledged as world champs)... He may have missed others which is the reason for this thread.

Starting to think that team events probably shouldn't count either ?? difficult to know when the comparrison claim of 28 aussie winners isn't substansiated with any details.

If (as usual) all you have to contribute is criticism, then fuck off you overgrown clitoris.
