speedo healer is over 150$ even at my reduced rate of purchase. i can borrow the misses android phone, get a waterproof casing mount for 50$ at most, download a free android gps speedo app that works on full display (almost 4"). tested in the car on Saturday on the way to raglan and proved very successful - so next is a bike mount.
Issues and solutions:
1. Sun glare = get "sun visor" for the casing
2. Battery power = take spare battery
3. Rain (not sure on this one yet)
4. Getting pinched = take it out of case and use the unit for its original intent, a phone
There will be other issues such as gps loss in tunnels etc but the idea is to get a feeling on how much the speed is out by so can stick to speed limit if kiwi law decides to make the 4km speed threshold permanent. We pay enough in regos and fuel tax - no need to give any more.
The other core benefit of using the phone is that if TEC gets sick of following me one day, I can at try and find my way back via google maps / navigator. (if there is service)
This article reminded me of my near miss with Mark 3 weekends ago with the lor group ride to Kaiaua:
