The courts however, not so fantastic...
That's exactly where the problem lies - I can understand why the police sometimes feel unappreciated by victims of crime since the courts are so slack in punishing real crime.

Anyway I did a lot of hard work only to have it squashed by police because they wouldnt be able to supply us with that information!!!

I asked if there was an easy way to check if a bike had been reported stolen and they said the only way to do it is to fill out a bunch of info in a police station. I cant see many people going to those lengths when they purchase a dirt bike.
I actually wrote a site similar to that for my graduation project. It uses user-supplied info though, not from the police. I just haven't gotten around to putting it live since I've been so busy since graduation with new job etc. It's fairly nifty. No text service but there is a mobile friendly version of the site you can check a VIN against to see if it's stolen.

Dummy version of the site is here if anyone wants a play. *DO NOT* put the effort into subbing real information on here since if I make it live eventually I'll scrap the content of the current database and your info will be lost: http://sacha.mccoskrie.natcoll.net.n...stry/index.php It needs work re: content (buying tips section is copy pasted from another site since I just needed some content on there for my submission), and if I was going to make it live I'd need someone with a bit of spare time to admin it. But yeah, I'll make it live one day if there's any interest.

I could help with that if you want. Stolen bikes are a particular grievance of mine and part of my job is keeping some virtual servers in line. Though I have an idea there is something like that already running.

My personal experience is that Police response to some property theft is very patchy. There is some kind of 'well your insurance company will cover it' mentality that makes them loathe to step in. In fact its this 'small' crime that affects the majority and major crime (murder etc) is still pretty rare. We have certainly had some good results from our Police as well as some dire ones over the years. Much like dealing with any other large organisation.

Well we had a brawl next door a few weeks back, we called the cops. We saw them do there work. Bloody legends. I wouldnt have kept my clam with the crap that was being thrown at them. One of them said they had a few jobs like that on this shift.

Well this morning, as I was leaving the gym the Police had a group of "homeless people" bailed up over a loaf of bread..... There were three cop cars and at least 5 coppers. The important stuff you see......

The favoured police method of finding thieves is to stop them for a traffic offence and find stolen shit in their car.

A stolen bike won't fit in a car, so we're shit out of luck.

"homeless people" stealing bread, they should be transported - that's right if they could afford it they would probably pay their own way to Aussie now days, a much warmer place for street living.

    .
It was a prime excuse for combining traffic and police so they have to use it. It will be in their KPIs somewhere.

Crime is down because people have given up reporting it. Did you notice one of the 'reasons' sexual crime was up was that people were reporting it more. Funny how that reporting thing is only applied one way by the govt. Another reason crime is down could be it is now so long since the quakes that Chch has been cleaned out. Or that people are to busy trying to find food that they haven't got time to steal bigger stuff that goes in the stats.

Exactly my point - they are so busy with this shit your stolen trail bike does not seem like a biggie.

We had been having problems with Kids in out little village just doing annoying shit like vandelising etc. We had our car broken into twice and it stolen once but put back with its tank empty.

I didnt bother reporting the 2nd and 3rd problems after my experience with the 1st.

I did my research found out where they all hung out and sorted them out one night, the whole neighbourhood has been without a problem since.

I even made it into the local paper hahaha Im not sure if the kids got the message or if the parents took the warning in the paper to not let thier kids out because of the vigilanty justice that was getting dished out haha

Don't want to know the details but "Choppa Communities Together" seems to be the answer sometimes.
