    Upside down gearbox?

hi all,new to this motard stuff but i think im in love already!! just purchaced a 2010 drz400sm and its alot of fun to ride!
I currently have a r6 race bike which ive been on for 2seasons which obviously has been changed to the upside down shift pattern ie one up-five down....so i really dont want to shift the wrong way on the dr by accident or on the other hand get used to that pattern again and shift my r6 the wrong way

Can i change my shift pattern on the dr as easily as it is to do on sports bikes?

    Thanks for ya help

your R6 is set up with whats also referred to a GP shift - idea being when racing its easier to push the lever down, than lift it up to save shifting time etc.
The R6 has a linkage that goes from the shift lever, to the cog that comes out of the gearbox, all you need to do on the R6 is meddle with the linkage that joins the two together to swap between GP and regular shift.

From what I can see, the DRZ just has the lever attached to the spline where it comes out of the gearbox - no linkage required.
(if you go have a look at them side by side, youll see what Im saying here)

So short answer, no, without a considerable amount of finicky custom fabrication, you cannot change your DRZ to a GP shift.

If you are genuinely concerned about getting the gears wrong, it is very easy to convert your R6 back to standard shift.

In all honesty though, the DRZ and the R6 are two very different bikes, and I dont really think you will have much trouble riding each differently, give it a couple weeks to get used to, and youll find that you wil have created habbits for each bike and riding style and it will unlikely be a problem

anyone point me toward a mod or kit to reverse an old fireblades shift.

tried to DIY but my linkage just can't handle it, it catches on something if u reverse it. sucks, (have fixed rearsets on there now not the standard stuff but prob no different)

the aprilia is reverse shift and it is much nicer for me to change up by pushing down under throttle

What the other guy said. I run my road bike road pattern, my 150 bucket race and my 100 bucket road. Even the 100 and 150 are different enough that I seldom if ever get it wrong these days. When you do it's usually going for a quick upshift and in that case expect your nuts to hit the tank in a most uncomfortable way.

Did an engine transplant to my VT250, and the only differences were the shift pattern was reversed (one year had lever on peg, one year lever on engine) and the reg/rect had too many wires. Anyway, after a few shifts it was kind of easy to remember, still decided to swap it back to standard though. Is not too hard with a bit of mechanical know-how and a few spare parts.
