It's like Big Cat Diary down here in little old Urenui.

Haven't seen the bear yet (or the cougars for that matter!), but I'll be getting the trusty blunderbuss down from over the fireplace and loading buckshot, just in case.

Of course, that leads on to what is the best form of Lion evasion tactic?

Had it run very far to hide there? It looks completely stuffed....

By my calculations Paul, I would say 10-12 Ks...it was pretty awful weather out there yesterday, hence the umbrella I guess
It also held up a sign (which cant be seen in the photo) which read..'Urenui 4 life'

You bastid! I only just noticed the Pukeko boots remark, them kekos are under my protection dude, Lion fodder they ain't! .

I dunno, you warn a couple o mates about preparing for the possibility of lion attacks in the Naki and all ya get is ridicule. Don't come crying to me when you've had your fricking legs gnawed of whilst picnicking at the Wind wand ya piss taking feckers!

This from the Taranaki daily News date May 2013: A man visiting the area from Warkworth had his frickin legs gnawed off by a lion Today, when interviewed in Base Hospital Mr Maha said " I wasn't expecting that to happen, you'd think someone would have warned us ". When Mr Maha's friend and local resident Mr o'sutton was asked for his thoughts he declined to comment other than to say " just tell stumpy I told him so and good luck buffing that out"
    Oh bugger

Fine indeed to see such a majestic creature loose in our environment.

I shall be prepared for random lion attacks when next in the Naki

Why will nobody take me seriously, why oh why.

Here is some footage of what happened when three African kiwibikers listened to the warnings of their friend, preplanned and co-operated to thwart the mighty Lions. If only you guys would stand with me we could beat this menace.

Warning: video contains Lions eating , please don't watch if you don't like lions eating stuff.

    Oh bugger

People mock but this is a true story...

When I worked in the ZCX back in the day, part of the job was to 'monitor' every 111 trunk every night to ensure they were all functional. Best way to do that was to plug an adapted low impedance monitor across each one in turn as the traffic was directed to the trunk. We heard all sorts of weird shit as you can imagine...

One night there was a call come in from an elderly lady from North New Brighton about a lion in her back yard. HHHHOOOOOO a LION madam - certainly we will send around the lion tamer just after hes finished dealing with the UFO in the next block (sigh).

Soooo - after we all had a laugh until someone mentioned that there had been a similar call the night before and next night guess what - another call about a 'lion' and people had seen some pretty odd footprints in the sand in the dunes. (no digital cameras or cell phones then) By now the PoPo were thinking either this is a wind up or - gulp - there really IS a lion loose. Apparently there was a call to the local mini zoo and they were assured that all their big cats were all accounted for.... now anyway. Rumor had it Mr Keeper had a frantic few days tracking down his pet pussy cat who was enjoying a little free time.

    THEN

My mate actually nearly shot a Lion between wellie and the naki. True! It had busted through the inner fence and was a bit agitated so he was back up 'big gun' for his mate who was on tranquilizer gun duty. Fortunately the dart stuck.

Now thats just two that I know about....

So a pride of wild Lions in the Naki? Well its certainly possible and considering the insular nature of the place - entirely possible for a breeding population to hide out relatively undetected.

    cough
