Hi Risk Newbie #352 (the_rolla)

Hey y'all

New member and new to bikes (apart from the compulsory stupidity in my far off yoof)

Started off on a VL250 Intruder back in April, but sold her asap when the LAMs list came out, and now riding a Hyosung Aquila GV650 illegally until 1 October (but am showing an L plate)

"Hi Officer
yes, here's my learners licence....what, not until 1 October? Oh, stupid me....but umm, surely if it's safe in October, it's safe in July ? "

A group of mates have all got licences and bikes this year, for a two week South island trip next summer.
I imagine we're exactly the "hi risk returning or older recreational riders" that are likely to have a serious off....
Hopefully, we'll all survive until and throughout the big trip.

It's a sobering experiance (well, not literally!) reading some of the site rules, FAQs and stickys here about crashes....

Did the Beachlands, Kaiua, Hunua, Clevedon round trip again on Saturday - awesome trip and perfect weather.
Looking forward to some longer trips as soon as the seasons turn a bit....

I might be mistaken, but if it isn't one of the specially modified bikes, it will still be illegal in October.. right?

(besides, the VL250 was probably a better bike :P)

I think iYRe has something. Does that *exact* model apear on the LAMs list? The standard one *wont be allowed*. It has to be a special engine restriction model - and it has to be sold like that. And it must have a standard exhaust, with zero modifications.

ps. Numbers are pretty low at this time of the year, but why not come along to NASS or SASS?

These are not LAMS legal.

I dont think you are mistaken. I dont recall seeing any hyosungs at all on the list (admittedly I was looking to see ig the gt/gt-r models would be on there)

the GV650 submodel L and C are om the list, so OP is probably fine.

But he'd need to get it throttle restricted before it'd be legal right? I've been looking at upgrading to a Kawa 650R when LAMS comes out and it's the same sorta thing. Illegal while unrestricted, but restricted it's fine. Not sure how involved it is in getting that done though.

I may be wrong but I think the bike has to be factory limited, you can't just get a standard one restricted.

You can make anything learner legal in the UK if you restrict it but I've only ever heard of Aussies making their official learner models unrestricted, not the other way around.

Hopefully...(hate that word) you can get it restricted with washers between the throttle butterflies and the head. Probably need a reduction to about 26mm. Then, I imagine you'll have to certify it to say it's legal, then take it home and pull the restrictors out

Negative. You can not restrict a bike yourself and then get it certified. It has to be restricted by a manufacturer, and have zero modifications.

Thanks for clearing that up what a bummer though. My GN250 will be illegal under LAMS having a whole 300cc, cam and ported head...
