So the responsibility for a car driver to see an oncoming motorcyclist lies with the motorcyclist and we as motorcyclists should all start weaving at the sight of a car at a cross-road. Was this video funded by Moto-NZ?

No, I believe that if I have to take emergency action to stop before colliding with a fuckwit that doesn't look properly at intersections I'd rather my motorcycle were in a vertical position rather than weaving all over the road like a numpty. You'd be better off slowing down in situations like that, rolling off the gas at the very least. I've never had a SMIDSY and I've never used the SIAM technique, maybe I should buy a Lotto ticket?
The old duck had it right. The answer lies in driver education, not riding like a cock.
And how do you know that weaving is going to make any difference? I'll continue to believe that remaining in full control of your bike and being in the best position to effect an emergency stop is going to have a greater chance of preventing a collision, as opposed to having confidence in what is going on inside the head of another motorist who, as you say is likely munching on a pie, talking on the phone & scratching their balls.
It's so much easier to put out videos like this one, putting the responsibility on the motorcyclist and taking it away from others on the road. Where's the video campaign aimed at car drivers?
the most sensable thing said in the vid was it is not the riding but the crashing that hurts, the stupidest thing was that SMIDSYs are the motorcyclists responsibility. Being seen is not the motorcyclists responsibility, being seen is to our benefit.
The fact that the background behind the car isn't moving doesn't mean the motorcyclist isn't visible against his background. That is like saying that because you are having trouble seeing on coming traffic against a setting sun they can't see you against a setting sun - yeah right.
As for the drunken weave... If the driver did see you they would probably be so bemused they would still pull out in from of you. Also the friendly boys n girls in blue would most likely want to check your sobriety and lord help you if you hit oil or any of the other shit that typically populates our road surfaces, especially on a wet and/or windy NZ day.
As for hi-viz he at least proves my point, a big lad in all black on a black bike provides a large dominating surface to stand out against the background and hi-viz would just break this up making me less visable.![]()

I wonder if the "expert" in the video offers the same advice for when approaching livestock on the side of the road?![]()

No it was not funded by MSAC. A friend sent me the link. My personal view is that it is everyone's responsibility, not matter what you are in or on, to take actions to drive/ride safely on the road but I'm still thinking about this weaving bit. Is that is your only take away from this UK based training video?
There's a possibility the weaving thing could be dangerous if suggested to noobs with little natural riding ability, it scares me.
I'd suggest you look at who is presenting the video. The two people in that one were both well over 60 and the bikes being used were rather sedintary in their nature. Use someone like Slight or Crafar to appeal to those who need appealing to, and use proper bikes too, if you know what I mean.
I think we all need to simply respect road safety. Avoiding SMIDSYs doesn't require new riding or driving techniques, just more awareness and better habits.
An interesting approach, thank you for the post, but I am not mad about weaving into an intersection. I am always watching every other vehicle & its behaviour very closely though. A couple of times I have deliberately headed for the centre of a pull out vehicle while braking gently before deciding whether to go in front or behind it based on whether the vehicle stops suddenly or accelerates. No question, a rider should always be prepared to deal with ANY car action.
Actually this is very similar to my intersection thread (still running). Once again, I say the above, but also if people keep pulling out in front of you figure out how to make your bike more head on visible. Some of my bikes have been much better than others in this regard. If they are bad, spend money & sort it - right or wrong, it is your life.
Motorcyclists are responsible for their own safety. Any steps they take to increase their own visibility ... will be to their own advantage.
It can not/does not remove ANY responsibility from other road users when they have ignored simple traffic rules.
But WE have the "Headlights ON law" now ... so we dont need to weave. We KNOW they see us now ... don't we ... ???
