Race helmet painting?

Didn't know which section to put this in.

I bought a couple of matching helmets for our sidecar but I wanted to re-paint em to match sidecar.

Anyone done this DIY before? what type of paint can be used without affecting the helmets integrity? And how much prep is needed? light sand then slap some color on?

(I have seen professional quotes for close to 6/800 bucks to get a helmet painted! stuff that.. I'm sure I can do it myself)

Before you get to carried away,You will need to get them inspected by an MNZ steward,So as anybody that views them at a later date knows they werent damaged before painting,Then I would talk to the distributor to make sure its safe to do so,Carbonfibre or Fibreglass helmets are okay to paint,BUT I would recommend you use 2K on them as there's not so much solvent involved.

Cheers, these helmets are both currently used (near new) for racing so yea the MNZ stewards give it a sticker each race day so should be ok to get them to acknowledge its fine before painting.

helmets are fibreglass (not sure if pure fibreblass or a composite or something, just says fibreglass on the tag)

and yea 2K easy enough to use.. i mean they paint the helmets at factory so must be able to paint em somehow without damage.

Looks like you should be right with a glass helmet. I'd get somebody who knows what they are doing to get the job done but it's your head

YOUR POLYCARBONATE HELMET MUST NOT BE PAINTED.
Make sure your helmet is not subject to solvents or fuel in storage or transport to and from and during meetings.
Solvents of any kind must not be used to clean your helmet – use soap and water.
Any sticker should only be placed on a helmet by using the adhesive provided on the sticker.

Yep my cobber Lee bradford painted his lid - it was a brand new lid, 2k paint came up to his liking, just mask her all off and you'll be sweet.

choice, I can get 2k cheap as well, just did the sidecar in a 2k yellow so I'll be able to use same paint. Perfect. I'll take most of the bits off the helmet and yea mask off the rest. inner linings n stuff come out anyway. I think I can do a half decent job of it.

hehe not much in the old noggin but yea.. I'll do a little more asking around to check the deal with my specific lids. I would get it done by a 'pro' but they wanted around the 800 dollar mark or more(depends on level of detail etc), fair enough they do a proper job and it takes many hours but x2 for both helmets stuff that. I'm going for a DIY simple design/pattern and a race number maybe, bout it. On the cheap as always! haha.

Best part about doing it yourself is the high you get off the fumes. Use moderation though, just look what happened to Billy.

what brand are they? contact the local rep and ask them what paint is or isnt suitable, they should be able to get you a clear answer

Trying.. I've only got a couple of photos and kinda hard to see, looks like they just had yellow/black stripes.

ROOF, made in France, no local rep as far as I know of, never seen them sold here. I bought one from Aussie and one from the UK and dealing with Roof themselves would be easier if you spoke French haha..

beautiful helmets though..

I'll dig a little bit and yea ask around some more before I lay any paint on.

They are ROOF ro10 'Daytona' helmets incase anyone else comes across the thread and knows about em (they get the gold star of approval in the UK for motorcycle racing too! )
