Old Steve now in MacKay, Tropical Queensland

I'm sitting here out on the balcony, sipping on a glass of shiraz, in MacKay up in tropical Queensland. It's just on 7 o'clock in the evening, the sun has gone down and it's still mid to high 20's. The chance of a job here came up, I took it, and my Suzuki Boulevard M50 is listed on TradeMe and available for a test ride at Bayride in Tauranga.

I've never seen so many Harleys! apparently every miner goes out and buys an HSV ute and a Harley. The local Harley agent here in MacKay ( a town the size of Tauranga) sells more Harleys than any other agent in Australia. They had an open day at the Harley agent the other weekend, and the test rides were going every half hour in groups of about 20 bikes. Geez, I miss my orange M50!!!!! I'll be bringing all my ATGATT over after Xmas.

I don't think they're bought because they're a ute or a Harley, I think they're bought because they're representations of the obscene amounts of money these guys are earning.

Anyway, if you've got any chance of riding on a road with corners, why would you buy a Harley?

I was stopped at the lights last night and a guy pulled up beside my car on a beautiful 70s Yamaha. I wound down the window and said to him how I liked seeing a bike which wasn't a Harley and he laughed - he's the one who told me that he thought all the miners want a V8 ute and a Harley.

We were in FNQ back in August and were amazed at the number of people out motorcycling just north of Cairns. The weather in early Spring and the roads there just beg to be used by riders. The standard of driving seemed less hostile as well.

Have fun wearing your riding gear in summer. It's bad enough in NZ.

Posting edited, regret use of inappropriate language.

Katman, surely you recognise this is one of those universally accepted truths. Harleys don't handle, Harleys are always broken down, Honda's are gay ...

awa355, lost my job in Tauranga and spent 3 months looking for a new job - jobs are available in Tauranga if you are a truck driver, a forklift operator or a nursing home assistant. This job came up on SEEK, my skill set met it exactly, and so here I am. Spent 3 days this week visiting 3 of the mines in the Bowen Basin, everything is bigger than in NZ - geez you should see the roadkill, possums here are the size of kangaroos!

I think you'll find that it was a kangaroo!

Just watch for all those dangerous animals. Snakes, crocs, fire ants, Australians.
