Deliberately threatening/wreckless driving towards motorcyclists

I would have to agree, a bit more information would be nice. I'd hate to go off all half-cocked about a situation I did not understand fully.

So anyway, were the car stopped in the left lane for the red light, or were they parked on the side of the road? Plus the car that tailgated you - was it in the left lane behind you, and didn't slow down when you were looking for room to change, or was he in the middle lane and failed to adjust his driving once you had moved into the gap? Paint us a picture with your words.

One thing that does throw me the first few times in Auckland is the places where there are two lanes, but the left one also has parking spots. Suddenly you go from a narrow lane to something that would make me uncomfortable to fit my bike in, let alone a car. I mean, I like it tight, but that is pushing it!

Anyway it's good to hear you at least made it out of there physically undamaged.

OK, well OP, welcome to West Dorkland. They drive like maniacs all over Auckland but they have special dispensation to drive out west.
Like the others here, I'm glad you and your girl got through the ordeal unscathed.
But, you must take responsibility for yourself and or your pillion at all times when on a bike.
Being right, battered, bruised or worse is not an option.
Sounds like you did the right things, but that doesn't stop some dickheads from continuing to be dickheads.
Next time and THERE WILL be a next time, make sure you and yours are safe, first and foremost, don't go off half cocked at other motorists particularly if your'e on a bike, much smaller target and so vulnerable to cages and their controllers.
So, watch well,learn when and how and most importantly live long enough to become a nuisance to your kids.

I'm not really sure what all the Whingeing is about Auckland drivers. Been here a few years now, and after doing a lot of commuting, including 9 months on the bike, and in truth I haven't seen much of anything that would indicate to me everyone is a homicidal manianc. I live about as far west as you can get and not be in the Waitaks as well.

In truth, compared to a huge part of the world, Auckland, and indeed NZ drivers, are actually quite good. Certainly, ya'll are a much better bunch of drivers then I left back home. Every now and then somebody does something mildly silly, but certainly nothing to get yer knickers all in a bunch.

Only problem with NZ drivers as a whole, is I've never met such a bunch of slow, law abiding ninnines in my life. Everybody doing 90kph on an open motorway at 11 at night. Speed limits 100 people, the cop isn't going to pull you over for doing the indicated speed limit i promise

I'm guessing you worked out OP that what you did was stupid.You placed your life and the life of your passenger at risk.
Expecting other road users to react fast enough to avoid hitting you when you swerve in front of their vehicle is just asking for trouble.
No Im not a "riding god" that never makes mistakes but I sure as heck don't go blaming other road users when I screw it up.

for the OP: get used, Auckland is one of the worst places I have ever ridden. I have seen more intrinsecally dangerous places expecially in southern europe and asia, where people are much more friendly and aware of what's going on around them.

Now I'm not one to be a spelling Nazi, quite the opposite, but you really shouldn't call someone's account of a situation bullshit and insult their spelling when yours isn't any better.

Pretty much. If you think Auckland drivers are bad you probably don't ride defensively enough.

In response to the OP, it sounds like you should have waited for that car to pass before moving into the other lane. If he was tailgating you for 30 seconds or more, with a passenger on the back, it might have paid to have pulled over and let him pass, if it was safe to do so. That's not to say he was in the right but it's not really worth both your lives over.
