2003 VTR1000 noise?

Hi, I have recentry brought a 2003 vtr1000 27000kms, went for a ride today and noticed when pulling out of service station there was a clacking noise coming from what sounded like the rear wheel area in 1st and 2nd gears, I've heard about the cam chain tensioners. Would this noise be that?

If it's the rear wheel, check you chain, cush drive, and wheel bearings.

If its cam chain noise you can still hear it at idle. Blip the throttle gently with your head close to the cylinders if you hear an odd rattle or clacking it could be the cct.

Check the chain for slackness ... a loose chain can sound like that.

Or if the indicator fluid levels are low ...

have you checked your suspension linkages?

Cheers guys! Got out there and had a look at the chain... plenty of play, so tightened her up and presto noise gone! Will pop into my mechanic tomorrow and get it torque wrenched.

The chain will stretch ... so no matter how tight the axle/adjusters nuts are .... it will get slack again.

Hope you set the slack correctly, pretty sure too loose is better than too tight, at least when it comes to chains.

20-30 mm slack in the middle either side the swingarm move the chain right around to make sure no tight spots and your be right

Better yet buy your own torque wrench.

Get some rowdy mufflers for it - then you cannot hear any pesky noises ........
