It seems when a car driver does the unthinkable, they are viewed in a very different light...http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...post1130441681
Though no body was injured/killed in the Ducati/Police incident, that fact alone, does not excuse the rider for even contemplating what occured inside her helmet, that made her ride at those speeds on a public road.
Her choice, but a bad one.
Wow. To compare an extremely poor decision that led to loss of life and a decision that led to a "believed to be more than 170km/h" speeding incident is quite something.

Lack of forethought...similar to a few previous posts.
When a biker makes the wrong decision, the reaction on here by and large, is very very different to when a car driver makes a wrong decision.
A little bit of balance would be the mature stance.
That accident in the Naki yestarday?...was a accident, tragic, but an accident nonetheless. No one ment for it to happen.
I can't agree with the "no one ment for it to happen", when I as a driver do something as stupid as the driver of the van did, I take the risk of crashing, and causing harm, and I should know this. And while I don't mean it I happily risk it.
The driver of the van should not even have attempted to overtake three stationary vehicles at an intersection..the driver should have slowed down and stopped and waited his turn. End, full stop here.
Overtaking, several stationary vehicles at an intersection, and driving into oncoming traffic, is willfully taking the risk of causing a carambolage.
There is something really wrong with someone driving like this, no regards for life, not his own, not that of his passengers and certainly none for the life of other road users.

Only this year on a group ride, a number of bikes were overtalking a vehicle on the crest of a hill...they were willfully taking a risk. I doubt that any forethought was present on that occassion.
Some in the group were horrified at what they were seeing and backed right off.
Like I said earlier ...Occassionally, you are lucky enough to sit back and say...''that could have had a different outcome''.
Some people in this thread seem to be taking themselves too seriously. That road is not particularly dangerous and 170 would be considered by some to be relatively modest. Not legal, just modest. And there would be several local KBers who would not be in a strong postion to argue against that on the basis, "Let him without sin cast the first stone?"
While I am familiar with the particular road, I don't know the lady in question but good luck to her. If she keeps behaving like that, she'll need it.
As for the driver of the van, jail time would be appropriate - but is not likely.
The big group rides like the toy run make me uncomfortable, too many riders leave their brains at home. As in this instance though, it's not only the other riders you have to watch out for.
Glad I stayed home.

" Life is not a rehearsal, it's as happy or miserable as you want to make it"
From Wiki ..
Noun
carambolage m (plural carambolages)
(billiards) a carom, a cannon.
(by extension) a car accident involving 3 or more cars hitting each other successively, pile-up
"Carom-like" accidents are bound with excessive speed and high traffic. They happen more often on highways.
