Have owned 2x Superdukes ( 1x 'R' spec) and loved them both.
But are you looking at the lower CC models?
lookin 990 but should i be looking 690?
I presume the SMT 990?
I had an SM 990, 6'3 and it was fine. Bear in mind it's basically a naked bike and you'll be fine. Go test ride one. They're mental!![]()

In my opinion, write off the 690 SM...it is too underpowered. The 990 is a much better bet.
Nail your colours to the mast that all may look upon them and know who you are.
It takes a big man to cry...and an even bigger man to laugh at that man.
The SMT is the only bike I have considered as a direct replacement for my TDM, ride anywhere but with KTM attitude & up to date technology. Less weight, more powa & better brakes & suspendies.
All the reviews were good from my perspective, it seems relatively sensible, can fit luggage & nods it's cap at doing a decent run comfort wise, for me that's over 500 km.
Then I spotted one in the pits at Paeroa last year. I think, maybe year before. Looked great but it had bugger all seat! The missus decides what colour i paint the house & my arse decides how far i ride. Laws of nature. Any hoo, that tempered my enthusiasm a bit.
FWIW, I would still love to have a crack on one, nothing else on the market is fitting that bit mental but practical niche. I've got practical, a bit of mental would be nice too. If your buddies actually ride rather than drag race have a look at the Duckati Hypermotard, little buggers in the twisties & a guy I know goes down to Paeroa two up on his from Russell, BOI. They do spend a night in auks, though.
I like the Aprilia Dorsudoro too, but again, I want to be fit enough after 3 or 400 k's to do some scratching if i get the chance.
Manopausal.
Stu from TSS was generous enough to loan me his demo 990SMT for Easter two years ago. I was smitten, and still am. I may have even written a review about it.
It was one of those bikes so hard to fault that I was forced to focus on nit-picky stuff. Things like the decimal points being way too hard to read on the display and the fact that using the kill switch to turn off the engine also killed the display. A Short Arse(TM) may struggle riding one.
That said, I reckon that the 990SMT is one of the best touring bikes ever built. For the price they sold for, they would have needed to be.
However I don't think that KTM sees a future in road bikes and has largely given up on these things at this end of the planet at any rate.
I spotted a low km version for sale on Trade Me a few weeks ago when I was in the market for a motorcycle. I was tempted. If not for the cash flow rigours of self-employment, it may well be parked under a cover outside Chez Hitcher at this very moment.

I did write a review: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...92-KTM-990-SMT
