It is indeed, as is the upper chain roller ripping off and taking a chunk of the frame with it.

What about oil pumps? I've seen one with slightly loose screws on the pump, that was a worry. Bloody good motors though, you can take them out to a fairly decent size too

Road bike? There is usually some poor bugger who has to unload his Hornet 900 in a hurry selling it for too little on Trademe. Mind you the same applies to any bike on TM!

Check for a noisy third gear when you test ride, can result in catastrophic engine damage.

it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

OK, that was based on hearing a friends DR whining so loud I could hear it from riding alongside and shortly afterwards it did this. Just out of warranty, too. Fortunatly caught before it caused too much collateral damage

Mine whined too. Pulled it to bits and was good as gold. $1k+ for nothing. Opinion is that poorly shaped (cut) making noise but strong as.

My 3rd gear seems fine (2008), but my mate's old DR makes a bit of noise (2002?). I'm pretty well known for destroying gear boxes, but that's always been on Kwakas.

Did I hear somewhere that they improved things from the 2008 model onwards? Could be all BS.

What to look out for? Hmmm, tinkering owners I suspect...maybe trying to make a bike into sommit it will never be?
All the guy did was post news that he sold his Busa and wanted a DR650 because he liked them.....
Ha.....Now he is gonna buy something inferior after all of this scaremongering...Maybe?

I have one for sale still, yes, the chain rollers are intact (never been off road, that's why)
Third gear works fine, doesn't whine (rider does) when it gets tough....
All in all it is a good bike.......NO, great bike.

    Things to do?
Wait for it to snow, then spend five months in my man cave thinking of things to try and make better after getting paranoid reading ADV rider forums!
Alas, it is summer here, so that ain't ever gonna happen.
ride the bike, if it isn't what you are after why try making it something it isn't? Huh?
