The guy is not a dedicated motorcyclist, he simply rides a bike .... not the same thing!

It's an "assignment" (Whatever that might mean on stuff.co ...) usually a piece of drivel from an over-educated young person called "a student" ... and therefore drivel ...

He could not see what was wrong with what he has stated on that article
Did you point him towards this thread???
It would be interesting to hear his replys to comments posted here.

I've read that comment over and over and feel like I'm missing some sort of contextual information that will help define what you just said.
If a man is alone in the woods and there isn't a woke Hollywood around to call him racist, is he still white?

It was in reference to the fact that it's important to see who wrote the article. In this case, as I wrote earlier, it was just a reader report ie: not from a motorcycle instructor. Cheers.

He has just responded on the Stuff Page :

Nick Summerhayes here, under my pseudonym Wes McGuinness.

Thanks for all the tips and the link etc. I will have a look.

Maybe 'tailgating' was too strong a word...
I guess I should say any collision is bad but a rear-ender should be less damaging... like roundabouts being better than intersections. On a roundabout you are more likely to get side-swiped or rear-ended which is better than t-boned at an intersection, but Cantabrians don't know how to negotiate roundabouts so most have been removed.

Point taken on the Kaikoura stretch, and I'm sure there will be some other non-suitable for motorway portions.

Stuff did edit it things a bit; around town, I was suggesting if you have time to be on the right hand side of the vehicle you are following when a right turning vehicle is sitting in an intersection... the idea being you're giving the person sitting there a chance to see your headlight(s).
Then, just before you traverse the intersection say 10 metres behind the car in front, you move over to follow the left hand tyre of the car in front. Once through the intersection drop back and get over to the right again.

To the person who mentioned the travel writer (Charley Boorman ?) I agree. I would love to go wild on NZ South Island roads when there is not one other vehicle on them at the same time as me...

I can't really argue with the guy who says I should pack it in as I'm too paranoid... I wasn't like this in Europe.

I actually cycle commute much more than I bike, and just this morning I had that classic where I got overtaken by a car as I'm 4m from a main road, so I rode out with the guy. He seemed surprised.

I actually didn't think the article was too controversial, but I've had a call from an Auckland biker who was not happy, saying that some professionals were horrified at the suggestions, so I may need to pull my head in.
I guess the debate is always good. It's the only thing that will change anything.

YES, to the guys who say ride like you're invisible, and everyone out there wants to kill you; most can't be bothered to go through with it, because of all the messy litigation involved, but there are always a few exceptions...

To finish, I'm sure that all you fellow bikers out there already know that the colour of adrenaline is... brown...

One big road down the middle of the South island? great idea, but who would ride on it?

He's a cyclist so thinks he has some sort of moral highground to comment on other road users.

Why the surprise? It hasn't stopped KB'ers who have never bothered to upskill after getting their license from spouting bollocks
