well get the clutch rebuilt heavy duty, gearbox strengthened and rebuilt and the diff strengthened and rebuilt, or shortened Nissan diff (although i hear Hilux diffs are decent also)

    Strong.
But you need a six-speed to avoid screaming the head off the motor at 100kph - particularly if still on low profile 14" tyres.

Hence my comment about just buying a more powerful car.

I was disappointed to find the newer 6sp models had the same top gear ratio so not the overdrive I expected. I see no need for more than the 5 in ours. The stock running gear will take a bit more power but if you add another hundy horses you would definitely need to upgrade unless you don't mind a short life for it.

Its a car that's always been begging for a Rotary, which it should have had from new.

Would be surprised if a 13b and box wouldn't go straight in. New driveshaft etc and it would be a winner.

putting a rotary in one of those would be an embarrassment to the rotary name.

Thinking back, in my old car club an older couple bought a brand new one and came club racing. It went well. The last time I saw it they had turboed it from a kit they got from the US. They went out to get a people mover and came home with the MX5. They were a cool couple. Both drove.

Ignorance, envy and hate and rife in this thread! I doubt many of the anti mx5 posters have any experience in actually owning and driving an mx5 hard over winding roads. It is good fun. MX5s are not powerful or full of features, but they are an excellent well balanced convertible rear wheel drive sports car, that are affordable. If people are slaves to the stereotype of a "hairdressers" car, it speaks more about them than the car itself.

Either that or 1,000,000 hairdressers world wide have bought one. Total sales are now over the million.
