The guy I bought the YX600 off of shipped his Bandit 1250 over to Aus and regretted doing it. Real pain in the ass as the Aussies are real wankers about it with tonnes of paperwork and requirements. With what you have to do and pay, it'll end up the same or cheaper to buy one over there...

Get hold of Mainfreight, they're excellent. But as Tgadee says...unless it's a bike you're really attached to, don't do it. If you do decide to, make sure you get your personal importation licence sorted well before you go.

I wouldn't bring it over unless it's something special and you don't want to replace it. Sell it in NZ, and buy something equivalent in OZ (at a higher price than you'll expect as well).

Yeah, I just don't understand why bikes are so expensive here in OZ. You'd assume there must be economies of scale in handling larger numbers of bikes, GST is only 10%, and yet the prices in OZ dollars is higher than the NZ price in Kiwi dollars and there's SNZ1.23 to the Aussie dollar at the moment. But then the distances are bigger, where I am in Mackay is 1000 km from Brisbane, and Cairns is another 1000 km further north from us. And Brissie is about 1000 km north of Sydney, so the distances start to add up.

But the prices of bikes here are significantly higher than in NZ, and that's the sticker price that's higher in Aussie dollars. So they're probably 30 or 35% more expensive here once you've converted from $A to $NZ and accounted for GST.

Yep, that's why I hire bikes when I'm over there. Even longish term works out better for me and I swap bikes every so often depending on what the type of riding I'm doing.

Agree with the Mainfreight option . Sent a YZ360B to Perth and they were awesome.

Even had a guy waiting for me at the Depot when I pulled up with the trailer. Paperwork took about 15 minutes and it was good to go.

Get routed do it but at only a few times a year by the look of ity.
I am looking at freighting my bike over there for a Cape York trip next year cos there is noone up north renting out Adv bikes.

I found this site today which provides an instant online quote with a pretty comprehensive price breakdown. I was quoted $2000 to get an RS50 shipped from the UK, which seems fairly reasonable.

There is loads of information and advice on the site as well, so it is well worth a look.

I sent my Wee on a return holiday trip to Melbourne a couple of years ago by sea freight.

We used an Auckland freight company that I'd NEVER recommend to others (PM me if you want their name).

Basically:
- they wouldn't quote a price. Hint, all prices were higher than they estimated.
- they made several promises about the crate and packing. Hint they did a crap job and my bike arrived in Melbourne in such a way to prove that they lied.
- they said that was the full set of costs. Hint, they "forgot" to mention some others, hundreds of them! So when we got to Melbourne it was, oh you want your bike? Then hand over the extra moolah first.
- their / the insurance stuff is a scam. Hint, their insurance actually doesn't cover jack shit. Shop around for insurance.
- their information about timings was not even close. Hint, send your bike at least a week earlier that they say / recommend.
- the bike on the return trip got delivered to Tauranga, which they discovered after I pointed out that the on-line shipping info for the boat didn't have Auckland mentioned as a port. Hint, if you want additional trucking damage to your bike then let them pick the cheapest shipping agent and send it to a different port.
- the Oz equivalent of MAF are a bunch of cnuts. They un-packed everything and left it unpacked. The cover for the crate was never found.
- the wharfies (don't know which end) are a bunch of cnuts. The crates had a number of dents in them that came from what I can only assume was some fairly ordinary fork lift driving.
- they said that nothing would be packed on top of the bikes in the containers. Complete lies.

and a bunch of other stuff.


That, said the Oz shipping guy was excellent and if you want his contact details then PM me.

EDIT: I went back and checked the detailed wording of all of the emails to and from them. They would be welcome in most political parties in this country. Some straight questions from us, they wouldn't answer in writing, but would over the phone. Yeah right for disputes tribunal.

No grey imports and better demand affects the used market prices in Aus - although out of interest I just took three random examples off trade me and searched for a similar vehicle on bikepoint.com.au - and the Aus example was cheaper in all three cases. Hardly scientific though.

Used Boulevards might be the other way Old Steve but I suspect that is about Suzuki's NZ new bike pricing policy.

I agree about government charges being much higher in Qld.

That said - re OP - sell it. It's not worth the hassle.
