Has anybody spoken to an actual locksmith? not the mall type but the guys with all the chip key readers.
My understanding is that Honda works on a rolling code system so maybee a code reader can pick the code up off the ecu and program a chip to it. Then get it put on a blade key.
probably someones already gone down that path.
To see a life newly created. To watch it grow and prosper. Isn't that the greatest gift a human being can be given?
Sorry HISS system is not a rolling code system, There are two codes that the system needs one is an unique code imbedded in the key itself the other is one of four unique codes in the ECU that is programmed into the key by the ECU when it is set up in program mode. The HISS system then looks for these two codes when the key is inserted. The two customers that I have dealt with that had the local locksmith try to program a new key both cooked there ECU's, to the point that when one found there original key (kids had been playing motorbikes with dad's keys, key was in the kids room) that key would no longer work. New ECU time in both cases. One of my customers got the locksmith to pay half the cost of the new ECU as they assured them that they could set up a new key but couldn't, expensive lesson for locksmith.
The companies in the USA that offer repair have to open the ECU up to change internal components to affect repair, this must be to change internal codes. I have not had any experience with there repairs so would recommend more research before going down this route.
[QUOTE=BigAl;1130536196]+1, is this a problem for all bike makes with transponder keys?
YES. Suzuki, Yamaha, Ducati, all have the same issue. But Ducati any Yamaha make it more complicated as they have a master code key (A red coloured key) and this key is required to do any programing of new keys. Lose this key or not get given it when you buy the bike second hand and it's new ECU time if you require any new keys.
