Thread: What would YOU do?

We have a cat like that. It lived a couple of doors up, and when my daughter and granddaughter lived 7 doors up, when they walked past the cat either walked home with them, or walked with them down to our place. No feeding was done, but she got attention. When the owners moved about a km away the cat didn't. I found her scrawny and underfed 2 or 3 months later and took her in - there was no way she was moving away from her area. Cats are very territorial, where they live is more important than who they live with. We have another cat who must be a result of owners moving too, but I don't know where he came from, he just turned up demanding he live with us.

From the otherside of changing cat ownership, we once moved about 10km, and our cat didn't move. This was on Waiheke Island, and he would walk out the door at 11.00pm, and walk down our old drive at 8.00am - Onetangi to Oneroa, that's rough country for a cat to walk overnight. Everyday after work I'd go to the old house and bring him home, that night he'd walk back.We tried all the tricks of course, but another factor was that I'd just picked up a stray cat the week we moved....didn't help him want to stay. I bought him home 13 times until his paws were bleeding and he was shitting blood. I had to admit defeat, and our old neighbour was happy to take him over....or at least his daughter was.

If you are a cat person, keep the cat. If you are a heartless cat hater get all grumpy with it's owner.

LOL. Yes, comparable scenarios, entirely. It's a cat.

Exactly this. I hope you feel happy with yourself that little Johnny now cries himself to sleep because mittens has gone away, never to return.
Get your own cat, and hope you have less selfish neighbours than you are/were.

I know you have but if it happens again ring the owner, and tell them if they want you are willing to keep the cat.

We have 8 cats, almost all were looking at death row before we took them on. We HAD another one who was part of a litter we raised from 5 weeks, he used to go missing for a few days, come back for a few days and we were sure he was splitting his time between us and a neighbours. We tried attaching a note to his collar to let them know we owned him and cared for him. We did not know which neighbour he was staying at. Eventually one of our neighbours who was renting moved and our cat never came back. The owners sold the property and we couldn't find out who they were.
Months of posting fliers, years of ads on trademe, SPCA checks, Pets on the net add, trips all around Wellington to look when people found a stray that looked like Oscar.
To sum up 4 years down the track still no Oscar but we still stop the car and check out any cat that looks like him.

To some it's just a cat to some its a member of the family.

Let them know you are willing to keep and look after the cat and they may be happy for you to keep it. Otherwise they should try keeping it in for 3 Months instead of weeks before letting it out.

I already called them, as above and they picked him up. Were not going anywhere so the owners will always know where to find him.

I realise that, I guess my point was let them know you are willing to keep the cat if they are willing to let you.

They may think they are putting you out if the cat keeps coming back to your place. Who knows they may even be thinking of surrendering it to the SPCA when there is a good home with you willing to take it?

Oh no, I'm sure they would never give him to the spca. Well see if it happens again. I bet he just comes back cause he thinks he's the boss of the area, the other cat's seem to submit to him.

Let the cat do whatever it wants. That's what cats do. Tell the neighbour the cat is welcome to come around whenever it wants, but he isn't.

The cat knows the way by now.
    Keep on chooglin'
