Allo mate...the backfire could be caused by the carb manifold rubbers leaking,,,the bits between the and engine perish and let in air resulting in the backfire....hard to start ...cheap to buy on e bay.....replaced mine on both my xt.s.....hope this helps...

we put new ones in about 3months ago but the carb does leak when on the stand & gas turned on, am picking the float is to high, also found where exhaust manifold nut is missing the other one has come loose
so looks like will have to get broken stud out & drop float level, for a start

Now when yer say back fireing... are you meaning a timeing type back fire..ignition / valve timeing ?

Or a back fire from unburnt fuel in the Exhaust ?
that ones easy... Air leak... unburnt fuel + heat then add Air " oxygen" = bang "pop"

On my XT660 there is a AIS system " Air Injection System" yer could call it a controlled air leak
in the exhust pipe to burn any fuel... it pops & bangs on a closed throttle..

it's a pipe running from the air box though a check valve to one of the exhaust ports...
check to see if the 600 has something similar..
    Pete

aye Pete one of the front exhaust pipes had a broken stud & the nut on the other side has come loose, so have found the problem just got to fix it now
