There's a guy from Matamata who did a number of the Grand Challenge 1000 miles in 24 hours rides on a home-made diesel bike.

I can also recommend Paul Carter's book "Is that thing a diesel?" which he rides a diesel bike round Australia. I laughed until the tears came in quite a few places. I don't believe that "speed" in any shape or form fits in any discussion about that bike ...

Something I thought about doing once. Company I worked for had various Lister engines, 1, 2 and 3 cyl. The singles were used on generators, and there were some lying around. I had the engine out of my 1954 BSA, and measured it up for the fit...it was certainly possible. They were governed at 3,000rpm, slow, but could be geared up a bit. The problem was starting - they were hand cranked from the camshaft, so a 1:2 step up. Being left handed I had difficulty started the singles; open the valve lifter and crank like crazy and when going fast enough drop the valve....but I had to swap hands to do that, and my weaker right hand was marginal for the job. I could start the twins easier. I stuck with BSA singles, I could start them with my hand easy.
