Life would be so much easier if you addressed questions with a simple answer.
I know someone who had an uncle's grandmother who knew a farmworker that remembers a school bus driver telling the workers boss that his sister ( the bus drivers sister ) had been told that the killings could have been done by someone who was there at that time.
The chap who told me all this, couldn't remember if this ' someone ' was one armed or not.

...the investigation team put the murderer inside the house very early on, and believed this scenario to be ''true and accurate''.
True and accurate that is, until they wanted Thomas as the killer (some four months after the murders had taken place) which meant having the murders taken place from outside the house, hence the planting of evidence in order to make this seem plausible.
The Thomas gun was one of two that could not be ruled out as the murder weapon, so there is a 50/50 chance that the weapon used belonged to someone else (if you bypass the planted empty shell case from the Thomas gun)
I think it's highly likely that the murders were done by somebody who was there at the time.
