Not to insult the OP but for what reason (apart from being a cunt) would someone steal a bike like this? Surely the black market for KLR650 parts can't be that good. In a place as small as NZ the resale price for dodgy bikes can't be that good.

I hope you get it back and also meter out some severe punishment on the cunt(s) that nicked it.

Sorry to hear that mate. Years ago I had a DR200 stolen outside of Wgtn Polytech. Never saw it again and was fully insured but those arseholes State wouldn't pay up ( garage clause ).

Yeah thanks guys, I guess most have been there at some point.

As for insurance, I had an accident a few years ago, which resulted in a careless charge, so I've generally found getting insurance to be difficult. Not that I wasn't planning to, it's just it normally takes an afternoon of ringing round to find someone who would insure a learner driver with a careless driving charge, who's parking on the streets, at an affordable price.

you could try someone like Kiwibike Insurance brokers, you ring them and they do the ringing around...

Lots of "just got the bike hadn't got insurance yet" lately.

Insurance takes 5 minutes to sort on the phone and if you find something cheaper a couple of days later they normally refund you the full amount so you don't lose anything.

If you buy the bike on Saturday and it gets stolen on Sunday then sure there isn't much you can do but otherwise I see no excuse for not getting it.

Agreed. For future reference, I am an L-Plate rider and I am insured with NAC insurance, sister company of State. They are awesome and cost 17 bucks a month for full cover for my GN. A bike like yours would likely cost more but they'd still be very cheap.

What's a garage clause and what does it mean? Is it covered AT ALL if your bike is not in the garage at night? What about during the day?

It means you must garage it at night. Long story, but I couldn't garage it the night it was stolen, but I did take precautions ( i.e. chained it to a lamp post with a heavy duty chain ). Wasn't good enough for State nor me in the end

No idea. My policy certainly didn't go to that level of detail, but I would think it would have to be locked.

Haha, the bike's even worse when you see it in real life... all the plastic's faded, but it was my bike. And I had plans for it. Was gonna go down south and do a big tour down there over xmas (been here 9 years from UK, still haven't been able to get down yet :/ ).

And parts are cheap. And easy to find. And walking around welly, there are much nicer bikes that you could nick, with the same amount of hastle / risk I'm sure.




Probably is in a paddock / weed plot somewhere. Either that or $500 for a black market bike is still $500, and a lot easier than working for a week on minimum wage!

I don't know what sort of fight people with the garage clause problems put up but that is typical insurance company dirty tricks. I'd be reading the fine print and writing to the insurance ombudsman about that.
Had a problem with my car awhile back in that with my old job I was away every second night, technically spending more time in Akld than HB. And it was parked in a freight yard in dodgy part of town with no security. Declared this and they said no problem they calculate theft risk based on where I live. I also had off street parking for the car but asked if it was insured if I had to park on road when we had occasional visitors stay overnight and they said no problem as long as it was irregular etc. That was all with AA and recorded on their phoneline too...
If anyone with those garage clause paperworks could cut n paste it here would be good, you have to fight these things, as soon as they realise your not going to they wont pay out.
