Back in the saddle - BMW r1100r - any words of wisdom from other owners?

Been a while since i have had a bike of my own... last was a honda bros, was a good bike but i need to cut my outgoing costs so sold it and use a push bike for going to work!

Just bought a bike again... short term to have a 3 week holiday around the south island :-) , will be selling it soon after :-( Bought it down south so don't have it yet will fly down and start the holiday!

Its a 1996 BMW r1100r... sub 50,000k's (at the moment) New tires and battery. Has all the factory panniers, and a tank bag. & She's Red

I think she will be just the tickit .. will be riding 2 up... packing very light so we can get a tent on with us

Anyway Just wanting hear from any one who own's one of these to learn a bit more about the bike.

-How many L's per 100km do you get..
-What kind of tire pressure do you run.
-where is the 12v aux socket found how hard is it to run a cable from there to a tank bag to charge my phone :-) (photo of htis would be awesome so i can sort it before i pick the bike up).

any other tips or tricks

Any must see, stay do things in the south island?? will be visting friends in chch and dunedin.

Just a general comment it would be a good idea if you could get to ride the bike on your own first to get the feel of its handling power etc before going 2 up but you will have plenty of power with that size anyway and the
BMW twins have plenty of torque.

With regard to the 12v socket it may possibly be above the footpegs or they may have been an option on that model.

Yea sure, i have ridden on of the 2005 models... And remember it being very user friendly... Not crazzy power just very smooth torque from go, very well balanced. Not that exciting in any way ... but definably made for eat up the k's and staying comfortable. And i hope this earlier model still has most of those characteristics. If i wasn't touring i would probibly of got a vtr1000 now that's a bike that gives a bit of excitement :-P

good luck...returning to riding is the bizness man...enjoy it and take it slow...apparently we males return to riding only to end up in the ditch somewhere...the bikes are more grunty than what we used to ride back in the day but with a sensible head in your helmet you'll b sweet...
i like the beemers a lot though sometimes the riders can be a bit on the weird side but hei...go for it and enjoy the riding weather...should b a good ride from the south

Lovely engines, sweet to ride. I did find the range a bit disappointing for serious touring though - I think I got about 6-7l/100km - might have this in the link. Just normal sort of type pressures... 42 and 38 psi I think? I had a 1 metre cable that plugged into the power outlet (left side above footpeg) and could be used for trickle charging as well. The have a special plug (powerlet I think they are called: http://www.ramsolutions.co.nz/lifest...ycles/powerlet). Worked great running up into my tank bag.

I rode the Crown Ranges when I did my trip - that was about the highlight I think but that wholes ride down from Picton our through St Arnaud to the West Coast is great too... and Arthurs Pass . Must get back down there again...

Yes it seemed to run well but no marked improvement in economy. I spoke to the person who bought it off me and she has had a few issues with starting and running smoothly and taking it to a non-BMW mechanic hasn't seem to have helped - he suggested that the aftermarket pipe could be affecting the tuning but I found it was fine with the pipe - better if anything . I would recommend taking them to a BMW mechanic with the diagnostic tools - they are a pretty sophisticated bike for the time.
