Anyone keen on a competitive photo hunt rally? North Island 1000km+?

Hello motorcyclists, bikers and gang members....

Had an idea about organising an event similar to the rusty, but instead of giving a set route, each member gets photos of some well known, and some not so well known landmarks and the 1st one back (with photos of them at each landmark) wins a prize? Thinking of long distance and over a weekend or something?

Cool idea or dumb idea?

Not neccessarily a dumb idea, The words '1st back' would give some, the impression of a race.

I think it is a neat idea. Kind of a Tagarama. What if it was over three weekends, and then the files of completed sets of photos were placed in a bucket and the winner drawn out? Or sommat like that. Guess I'm thinking of the Ulysses four points or poker runs.

The three weekends suggestion would defeat the point of a marathon ride tho'.

Re race and pressure to speed - that would be up to the individual, im thinking of making it big distance and hard so that there would be little benefit to speeding. The way the rusty works is you need to do an average of 70km/hr to complete the event - which is hard but not impossible.

Having it over a weekend is an ok idea, the problem is with google and everyone searching for things online - takes some of the guess work out of it. Having a 1st back thing puts a little pressure on time so that people cant really cheat so much.

I also agree on the entry fee and prize money - its way more fun when there is some rewards to your efforts. It'd be small and a winner takes it all kinda deal (if large numbers participating then rewards for other places too). I'd probably do it over a long weekend and make it a long distance.

Maybe i'd say get as many photos as you can and have a due back time as if i make it hard enough not many would be able to get all the pics, if more than one person has the same amount of photos then its 1st back?

Dunno if a good idea or not, will take a bit of effort to organise.

Capital 1000 Km Cruise (C1KC ) which originated in Wgtn had @5 start points through out the Nth Isld last year, 1000km within a day is a good range ( start 0630 finish @ 1900 - 2000 ) no prizes for finishing other than a bar badge & cert with spot prizes drawen prior to event. Done a few of these & they are fun without being serious, Yes you have to collect photos of check points to prove the fact you was there which adds to the hype so maybe an event similar ???

A race across the countryside for 1000km+ is going to make you very unpopular with several organisations. For the first year, everyone unaware, you might fly under the radar, but as soon as there is any sort of incident, the spotlight is on you. Several well run events have had the spotlight put on them, and I understand the grief generated barely makes doing the work worthwhile.

I wouldn't be happy being surrounded by a bunch of people that think it's a race (and the pushing of limits that come with it), and the Rustys also had a few situations where someone binned it within half an hour of the start, just pushing too hard, when there was no need or pressure (other than that they put on themselves). The Rustys deliberately emphasised it was not a race, there were no prizes for 1,2,3 and the last checkpoint only opened after a reasonable time to assist. Anyone being stupid was usually encouraged not to return.

I did the events I've done for personal achievement, not for anything or anyone else. Part of it was also the social aspect, sometimes it was the only times in the year you'd see some of the guys or gals.

i can only say a big to anyone sticking their neck out to organize something, sounds to me like a brilliant idea, you could do both suggestions, a marathon event, but also have it open to those that may want to do it over a couple of weekends, Southern Rider run an event down here that a few on here have done and so do the southern touring group tho both events are not run as marathons and there is no prize except for a badge on completion but both events have set courses.
an event like you are talking about would be good as it would not matter where you started from i guess but it might have just one finishing point maybe.

if you wanted a common finish point then you could say those who wanted to do it over two or three weekends would get their photo Questions early and those that wanted to do it as a marathon would get theirs the day before with something like a coloured peice of paper or such like that had to be included in all their pics.

If I recall correctly there was the Southern Rider Escapade (?) that gave a route and points to collect photos to show you actually went there but you had several months to complete it in as few or as many outings as you chose. A Northern vesion of that appeals.
Perhaps have an entry fee to register interest and get the "official" list of landmarks, then a Prize giving get together where a "winner" is drawn from completed entries (for those that feel there needs to be designated winner rather than personal satisfaction of achieving the objective).

There is the strong possibility of another 1000 mile (non-race) being organised for October. May have similarities to The Rusty Nuts Grand Challenge, bu also some differences.
