Ooookay, just downloaded the files onto my GPS. All went well until I got to the "create track from selected route" option, the problem being that that option didn't exist.

In the end I just sent the files to the GPS and they are on their. Will this be a problem? How will I know if it will work prior to getting their?

Are the instructions they sent wrong???

Might take a roll chart as a backup.
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........

Yes their instructions are wrong and to do what they intended through the automatic filtering in Basecamp will create a messy thing.

Also see my last post... I'm manually adjusting things as best I can to make things work but to create a 200 point route still leaves us following straight lines roughly following the route but with much more detail than previous years.

You could get by using the messy thing Basecamp can create but it could be a little annoying in places along the ride.

You can use mapsource to load them if that's what you're used to.
They are 200 point Route files this time, use as per last years method in off road mode.
200 points should work on the Garmin Zumos, Map60/62 and Etrex legends.

Of course the 2009 route was a different one though.

Well, Mr. Transalper ~ I have loaded your files and I do say they appear to make more sense...

Interestingly enough I have learned something today about the more modern Garmins as in the Map62s and similar and what Epic have intended us to do is much cooler than using a route file. This is something I wish I had known before.
In my opinion their files still needed a good clean up and slight re organisation of cuts and joins, but I am inclined to use their method of navigation now... because I can on the 62s.

The instructions are still wrong considering they sent track files, not route files where the instructions indicated the other way round.
If you ignore the first bit of the Epic instructions and go straight to the bit where the talk about transferring to internal storage you'll be fine **if you have a compatible GPS for this method.

Anyway what they had planned for us is to load track files in to our GPS and navigate directly off those, no conversion needed, no route files needed. Now what's cool about the Garmin Map 62s is that it really is that simple, once the track file has been sent to the GPS you then simply press ‘find’ and then ‘tracks’ then select the one you want, press 'go' and you’re good to go as if you're navigating a thousand point route.

Here's the link to my trimmed and cleaned and slightly tweaked TRACK files again. I'll be navigating with the 62s straight from these as Tracks.

**will not work with Garmin Etrex Legend as the tracks get cut off 500 points in. I'm not sure about the Zumos but doubtful of the Garmin MAP60 too.

This is fascinating and, as noted by Woodman a bit scary. My first DB, first GPS routed event and, if I am lucky, I will be getting in last. Just as well I got my new lights fitted today.

Thanks for sharing your output. Could you suggest which of your sets would be best to load onto a 76cx? (They're the same as a 60cx functionally, I believe.)

I'm getting hands on a borrowed Map60 tomorrow evening to double check a few things but I expect the 200 point Route files be the best option for you. Use Mapsource or Base Camp programs or what ever you normally do to transfer things to the GPS.
For navigation of the Route files you use the off road option on the GPS. If you don't see that option there may be some settings to adjust.

    Awesome, cheers.

Which mapset do you reckon? I was planning on the latest standard OpenGPS mapset but wondered if the combined topo one might be a good idea. A bit tricky to read on the 76cx, mind you.

Probably just use your favourite mapset.
I feel Topo lines sometimes get in the way, sometimes they are nice to see but neither mapset mentioned has roads through the Awakino for one example.
The OpenGPs mapset without topo is probably more up to date.

Spent a pleasant evening chatting to Mr TA last night, and he took me through some of the issues with the route files (which I hadn't noticed) such as the route deviating up to the house, and going to a motel in Alex. Pretty half-arsed for a 'professional' job is all I am going to say.

so why then do I know, I will see you in far off places?
