What kills Motominders - Can they be repaired?

    Hi all,

Looking for clues: just got a KDX, Motominder's dead. Have fiddled with length on the plug wire and even hooked up to the kill-switch wire. No joy.

I'm assuming that they fire up pretty-much instantaneously when the engine runs, not needing minutes to get going. If this is the case, what could have killed it? The regulator on the bike looks dead, but the engine runs fine. Would un-hooking the blown reg help? I left it in to keep the connector clean, for now.

Can a dead Motominder be revived? It's not that I'm cheap (well, not that cheap) but my employer has a nice electronic workbench he pays me to sit at, so I might as well make use of it, if I can. Haven't opened the Motominder up yet either (in case someone says that dancing round the bike thrice widdershins at the full moon will revive it) so unsure if there's any special proprietary bits inside, or if it's all off the shelf & I can just replace the crispy ones.

And then work out what killed it in the first place...

Bike is only 5 years old, so flat internal battery not high on my list of expected faults.

    Cheers,

they just die sometimes, put it on a normal car/bike battery, if it does not fire up its dead,

never taken one apart to see why they have died,

They are a sealed unit and if you pull it to bits its probably a non repairable unit anyway. Mine died and I got a new on under warranty.

the motominder works from an inductive charge from the ht lead does not need a power supply,if you have tried 12 volts across teh wires it is probably fried

Because every 200 hours it pays to change the plug and clean the air filter

Hehe. I doubted mine the other day. Wouldnt start. I changed plugs, pulled plug back out and checked for spark. Checked compression......

It goes better when its got gas in it.

Two kicks and away it went.

Mainly because it came with one on it and I figured I might try to get it going if I could. Bike alleged to have ~150 hours on, so I'll see how I go. Also actually curious to see how much (little) I ride.

Motominder website suggests connection to the kill-switch wire if the inductive method doesn't work, and that's a bit more than 12V. Not testing that one with my tongue...

    .
I use a wireless bicycle speedo. So gives me time, speed, odo etc. And is stupidly light. I got the clunky stock speedo with my bike but that didnt last untill the first ride. 150 hours is young for a KDX.
