I think most people are smart enough to understand that there are people who are sick/assholes/sadistic whatever their race or colour, and who aren't stupid enough to write off an entire colour/race of people because of the actions of a few sickos.

It all boils down to life experiences.
Electrocute yourself on a seemingly disconnected wire, and you'll be very distrustful and wary of all wires.
Black guy carjacks you in traffic, or cuts your feet off, you'll be very distrustful and wary of all blacks.

Distrust of certain objects and beings are a learned thing, stemming from our evolution.

Especially when someone could show you an equal number of atrocities committed by people of your own kind.
