Yes they do. In fact there is most likely a Faraday cage in your kitchen, blocking the emission of electromagnet waves, otherwise known as radio waves.

A plane certainly isn't a Faraday cage however.

No that's not a farraday cage thats RF shielding. You can sit inside a farraday cage doesn't mean your shielded from RF in any way at all.

If an aircraft is struck by lightening the metal body forms a farraday cage- it protects the occupants the charge flows safely around the metal body and down to the ground. Just like a car.

A Faraday cage will block most RF, screened rooms used in RF testing are Faraday cages.

Except in an airplane, car..... Depends entirely on the cage. One thats designed for high voltage protection will do nothing to block high frequency RF. You can make an RF shielded building from fibreglass with a fine mesh laid up inside it - won´t do anything to protect you in a lightening strike as the mesh will not be able to carry the current of a lightening strike and it will jump to the nearest path to ground.

You can´t even drill a hole in a government RF shielded building without it being approved - the hole doesnt stop it forming a Farraday cage but it does stop it shielding all RF.

Bearing in mind - Faraday´s work was done in 1836 and radio waves werent "discovered" or detected for another 50 years.

Some confusion here.
Faraday's work was on electromagnetic charge, not waves. He assumed that all charge went around not through. He is right to an extent. This is why SOME waves don't make it through (generally low freq). You can actually get waves through a faraday cage, with is reliant on antenna theory not charge theory.
So yes - cellphones work on planes fine because all you require to get cellphone signal is a small hole proportional to the carrier freq. @ 850 MHz that hole could be 0.0000000117 m big.

This is why you cellphone works even though though the antenna is on the inside of the case......and in some instances the case is metal.

I think you'll find that the reason cell phones work on planes is largely because the airline hijacks your mobile phone service and charges you their own special tariff for the privilege of being able to use your phone whilst aboard. Other than that, assuming the service was switched off, you are dependent upon being able to connect via a service providing tower. Fat/remote chance of that out in the Indian Ocean.

Line of sight transmission it's mainly the horizon and objects blocking the tower that determine the range. Cruising overhead at 30,000 feet is only really 10km away. But yeah not many towers in range in the Indian Ocean.
