Some confusion here.
Faraday's work was on electromagnetic charge, not waves. He assumed that all charge went around not through. He is right to an extent. This is why SOME waves don't make it through (generally low freq). You can actually get waves through a faraday cage, with is reliant on antenna theory not charge theory.
So yes - cellphones work on planes fine because all you require to get cellphone signal is a small hole proportional to the carrier freq. @ 850 MHz that hole could be 0.0000000117 m big.
This is why you cellphone works even though though the antenna is on the inside of the case......and in some instances the case is metal.
