my other half sold his R1200 and is looking for something smaller. Last time I left him home alone to buy a replacement motorbike it was an outboard motor I came to, so clearly, I have to step into this process!
I had a look back aways in this thread and couldn't spot this yet...

Anyone know how long it's been around, had one, how do they handle etc, other bad bits in general? We've heard there can be electrical probs with the oranges?
Your opinions please, thanks in advance.
Talk to Warewolf. He is the 640a guru. Also Clint640, as his is the enduro version, same motor & frame.
I had one before Gus, & sold it to Taz. It was a great bike, top suspension, good motor. The 640s have a reputation as a shaker. I didnt really experience this. But no good as a pillion bike. There is a lot on info on them on ADVrider. I recall the weak points being the cam follower bearings & water pump seals. I replaced those at circa 40k
There were 2 being sold in Chch recently via Tme, & this may be the one that has lurked because of the sellers unrealistic sale price expectations. Start price is in the ball park IMHO.
If I were to go back to the 640 motor, then I'd look for a nice 640sx, which is more enduro (lighter) & comes with a better FCR carb & exhaust.
My experience with KTM part supply was also a contributing factor is leaving team orange
Hi Mrs Wolf
Its been around a while, dreamed of one of these before got my 950, though I think its a completely different beast being 60kgs lighter and all, (not so likely to get stuck trying to get up the Wilsons Rd exit) If you could be semi happy it would be ok reliability wise an not to shaky, perfect
Bit of money for the risk though

I've owned a 640E and a 625SXC and I'd really liked them - if you were at the more "adventurous" end of the ADv spectrum and didn't want to do too much road work. They do shake a bit (to what degree depends on the model and milage), but it's a great all round bike with a very solid and durable motor. Clint is another guy who knows heaps about them.
I was interested in that 640Adv and was watching it, but there is something strange going on with the auction. Firstly, the price is a bit over the top, but more importantly there were comments in earlier auctions about work being needed on that bike. Someone who had inspected it made a comment along those lines and the seller said that he would discuss that when you came to look or suchlike.
When I talked with the guy about it a few weeks back he said that he wants 10k for it. I pretty much told him he was dreaming and didn't pursue it any more. But I to saw the comments on the last auction that apparently it would need work to get a warrant let alone be ridden.
On a side note, If anyone knows of anyone wanting to sell a tidy 640 Adv or Enduro please let me know.
followed that bikes fortunes since he put it on TM. He's had two offers for 8.5K. don't know why he wont just say he wont take less than 10K and stop wasting peoples time? The feeling is from the correspondence that's there's something a little "unsaid" about the bike. Hadn't herd the wiring/WOF issue before...makes the 10K even more unrealistic.
please do not post pictures like this of a 690 - some of us reading this thread are struggling badly with post 690 ownership issues![]()
....wherezz that track go

Sorry mate, unthinking of me, Know the feeling, I'm still mourning the sale of my XR500 more than 30 years ago, time heals a bit and from time to time I forget and feel just normal.
BTW, What's the progress on you new bike (can go to your thread if you think its to off topic here)
